Offense Surges In 11-4 Win Over Wagner In Home Finale

5/1/2024 6:59:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball played its final home game of the season on Wednesday afternoon from J. David Walker Field, welcoming the Wagner Seahawks to Bethlehem. The Mountain Hawks took care of business, defeating the Seahawks 11-4 in the two teams' first meeting since 2004.

"It was great to see the seniors all make contributions and win their last home game," said head coach Sean Leary. "Ingino also had a strong performance with three shutout innings to earn his first win."

Lehigh (22-21-1, 7-14 PL) deployed several pitchers during the game, six different arms in total. Lucas Rich started on the mound while first-year Jack Ingino was credited with his first career win after allowing no hits and no runs while striking out four batters in 3.0 innings. Jake Toporek picks up the loss for Wagner (21-22) after allowing the go-ahead runs in seventh inning.

The Seahawks opened the game on a strong note, pushing three runs across home plate to take an early lead. Wagner scored its first run on a bases-loaded walk and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. A Chris Conniff sac-fly gave the Seahawks their third run of the inning, and another in the top of the third inning gave Wagner a 4-0 advantage through three.

However, the tides began to turn in favor of the Mountain Hawks in the fourth. Trystan Crawford walked to lead off the inning, and an Andrew Nole single put him in scoring position. The next at bat, Raffaele Rogers came through with a massive double to left field that scored both Crawford and Nole to get Lehigh on the board. Riley Davis then singled Rogers home the very next at bat, cutting the deficit to one run after four innings.

While the Mountain Hawk bats began to come alive, the Lehigh bullpen did an excellent job of keeping the Seahawks at bay. A scoreless fifth for Wagner allowed Lehigh to tie the game in the bottom of the frame, as Nole's single to left scored Tyler Young to set the score at four apiece.

The score remained deadlocked at four until the bottom of the seventh when the Mountain Hawks would finally gain an advantage. A Young single sent Robbie Carvelli past home plate to take the first lead of the game for Lehigh before Jake Whitlinger scampered home on a passed ball to make it 6-4 in the same inning.

After Ingino retired the side 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth, Lehigh had its most productive inning of the day. The Mountain Hawks scored five runs in the frame, which included RBIs from Carvelli, Whitlinger, Crawford and Rogers. Ingino once again closed the door shut on the Seahawks in three batters in the top of the ninth, securing the 11-4 victory for Lehigh.

Young, Crawford and Nole each recorded two hits on the day while Rogers finished with three RBIs off of three hits. Whitlinger, Davis, Carvelli and Drew Morse also provided one of the team's 13 hits on the afternoon.

The Mountain Hawks look to keep their postseason hopes alive this weekend in the Patriot League regular season finale. Lehigh will head up north to face Army West Point and Holy Cross in doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
