Mountain Hawks Win 6-2, 4-1 Vs. Queens To Sweep Doubleheader

3/2/2024 7:21:00 PM | Baseball

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Lehigh baseball returned to the Carolinas to begin a three-game series against Queens University of Charlotte. The Mountain Hawks played a doubleheader against the Royals on Saturday, earning a 6-2 win in game one and a 4-1 win in game two.

Cole Leaman earned the win in game one, allowing no runs in 5.0 innings while striking out seven batters. Marcus Danchision was awarded the save after striking out six batters while allowing only two hits in the final 4.0 innings. Queens starter Landry Jurecka picked up the loss, allowing eight hits and four runs through 6.2 innings.

"Our pitching was the story today," said head coach Sean Leary. "Leaman and Danch came in with another strong outing."

The game remained scoreless through the first four innings largely in part to excellence on the mound. Leaman faced only 18 batters in his five innings, including only ten in the first three frames. All the while, Lehigh was generating offense, however, they left five runners on base during that stretch.

The first run of the game finally came in the top of the fifth inning courtesy of a Ryan Cochran double that sent Owen Walewander cross home plate. The Mountain Hawks added another in the frame thanks to a Rafe Perich RBI single that brough home Cochran. The Royals responded in the following inning with a solo home run from Zach Weston that set the score at 2-1 through six in favor of the Mountain Hawks.

Perich stayed hot after his RBI in the sixth, crushing a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to put the Mountain Hawks ahead 4-1. Danchision continued to excel on the mound after he was inserted in the sixth inning, keeping the Royals off the board until the ninth inning. The Mountain Hawks tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth off of Justin Butler and Aidan Quinn RBI singles. Although Queens added an additional run in their final three outs, Lehigh held on to win by four.

Jack Hamilton started game two for the Mountain Hawks, striking out five batters in 3.1 innings pitched. First-year Julio Ermigiotti earned the win after 5.1 innings in relief, striking out six batters while allowing no runs while Tommy Lamar earned the save. Logan Schmitt took the loss for Queens after allowing four hits and two runs in 3.0 innings on the mound.

"Hamilton got us three solid innings to open the game," said Leary. "Erm was outstanding as well, going five-plus innings and handed it off to Lamar to shut the door."

Coming off of a three-RBI game one, Perich continued to hit well to begin game two. He singled home Jake Whitlinger in the top of the first to take an early lead. The Royals responded in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single of their own to tie the contest 1-1.

The score remained deadlocked until the fifth inning when Andrew Nole scored off of a Raffaele Rogers groundout. Whitlinger singled home Andrew Noone later in the inning to take a 3-1 lead over the Royals. Lehigh added some extra insurance in the sixth from Andrew Kohl's RBI single to lead 4-1 through six.

Ermigiotti continued to keep the Royals off the board until he was replaced by Lamar with one out remaining in the bottom of the ninth. Lamar forced the final two outs to seal the win and earn his second save of the season.

Lehigh tallied 21 hits on the day, with contributions coming from multiple spots in the Mountain Hawk lineup.

"Our offense continues to get runners on base," said Leary. "Today, we got some clutch hits from Perich, Cochran and Kohl."

The Mountain Hawks will match up with the Royals one more time on Sunday to conclude the series. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. from the Stick Williams Dream Fields.

"I'm excited to see how we respond tomorrow," said Leary. "Strong teams find a way to stay focused for the third game."
