BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh women's basketball pulled out a gritty 64-62 victory over Boston University Saturday afternoon at Stabler Arena on National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
The Mountain Hawks jumped to 13-8 (5-5 PL), and the Terriers dropped to 13-7 (5-5).
"I was really proud," said head coach Addie Micir. "I challenged them at halftime to do what we do and to do it at a higher level. I thought in the second half we came out and we challenged them a little bit more. We did it on the boards at the end, and we made some big threes in the second half when we needed to."
The Terriers had possession of the ball with 16 seconds on the clock after Lehigh missed a shot. Alex Giannaros drove down the lane and got a layup off with one second left, but it would not fall for the Terriers. Ella Stemmer grabbed the rebound, and the Mountain Hawks were able to hold onto the win.
Remi Sisselman ended up with the game-winning shot as she put the Mountain Hawks up 64-60 with 2:10 to play. While the Mountain Hawks were held scoreless for the remaining 2:10, they held the Terriers to just one bucket.
Four Mountain Hawks finished in double figures, led by Stemmer, who had 13 points. Meghan O'Brien and Remi Sisselman both finished with 12 points, and Lily Fandre tallied 11 points.
"We're the best when we play that way and take some pressure off of our top scorers," Micir said. "When the ball finds you open, we say knock it down, and we did tonight."
While Lehigh won by two, the Mountain Hawks led by as many as 11 due to a 11-0 run to open up the game. Despite holding a double-digit lead in the first frame, the Terriers ended the quarter on an 11-5 run to cut Lehigh's lead to 16-14.
