Four Mountain Hawks Finish in Double Figures in Loss to Loyola

2/18/2024 5:28:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BALTIMORE - Lehigh women's basketball dropped the season series to Loyola, falling 93-76 Sunday afternoon at Reitz Arena. The Mountain Hawks fell to 14-10 (6-7 PL), while the Greyhounds jumped to 13-11 (8-5 PL).

Lehigh shot 48% from the field, but the Greyhounds shot a whopping 63.8%. Lex Therien dropped a Loyola program record of 44 points to lead the way, while Laura Salmeron added 23 and Kelly Ratigan chipped in. Therien was a force all game, going 21-of-25 from the field. The Greyhounds dominated the paint, scoring 56 points to Lehigh's 26.

Four Mountain Hawks finished in double figures, with Ella Stemmer tallying a team-high of 19 points. Stemmer also was 2-of-2 from beyond the arc and knocked down her 134th career three-pointer, which is the 10th-most in program history. Stemmer tied Hailey Pascoe '19. Colleen McQuillen tallied 14 points, Gracyn Lovette scored a career-high 11 points, and Maddie Albrecht chipped in 10 points.

Although the Greyhounds picked up a controlling 16-point win, both teams got off to a hot start. Stemmer scored the first eight points for Lehigh and scored 13 of her 19 points in the first quarter. Stemmer put Lehigh up by seven with 5:27 to play in the first, and that would be the largest lead of the game for the Mountain Hawks. The Greyhounds closed the quarter on an 11-2 lead to take a 22-20 lead at the end of the first frame. Loyola would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the game.

Lehigh had its best shooting performance in the second quarter, going 6-of-10 from the field, but the Greyhounds outscored Lehigh 31-19. Turnovers proved to be costly in the second frame as Lehigh committed seven of them. Loyola led by as many as 21 in the second quarter, but the Mountain Hawks cut their deficit to 56-39 heading into halftime after Lovette nailed a last-second jump shot.

Lehigh showed some signs of life in the third quarter, slowly chipping away at Loyola's 21-point advantage. McQuillen knocked down a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the Greyhounds lead to 11, but that would be the fewest points Lehigh would trail by for the remainder of the game as Loyola outscored Lehigh 24-18 in the fourth quarter.

The Greyhounds held a 27-25 advantage on the boards. Loyola also finished the game with 27 assists on 37 field goals. Lehigh tallied 17 assists on 24 field goals. Albrecht and Sisselman tallied four assists each. The Mountain Hawks had 15 turnovers compared to seven from Loyola.

Whitney Lind chipped in seven points after knocking down a career-high of two three-pointers, and Meghan O'Brien also tallied five points.

Next up, the Mountain Hawks return to Stabler Arena on Wednesday when they host Army at 6 p.m. on Salute to Service, presented by Weis Markets.
