Mountain Hawks Grab Key Victory in 77-60 win Over Army

2/21/2024 10:41:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After two straight losses, Lehigh women's basketball bounced back Wednesday night at Stabler Arena, pulling away with a 77-60 win over Army. It was an important matchup with only four games left in the regular season.

"They executed great," said head coach Addie Micir. "Army went on their runs in the first half mainly from our offense. They are really scrappy defensively, and they got some turnovers and went, but I thought we put the clamps on them later. That's a really good team, and Army can score the ball, so I'm really proud of them."

Lehigh is now 15-10 overall and 7-7 in league play. The Black Knights are 11-13 (8-6 PL).

The Mountain Hawks had their best shooting performance of the season, going 28-of-48 from the field (58.3%). They were also effective from long range, shooting 9-of-19 (47.4%). Senior guard Maddie Albrecht had a career day and recorded the second double-double of her career after putting up 28 points and 10 rebounds. Albrecht's previous high was 27 points, which she scored at Colgate on Jan. 22. Albrecht was 10-of-13 from the field, and she also had four steals and a team-high of four assists.

'She does her," Micir said. "She's so good at letting the game come to her, so when you can score 28 points by just making the right reads, it's really special, and if you watch how the bench celebrates her, you know she's just a great teammate all around."

In addition to Albrecht scoring in double figures, Colleen McQuillen and Meghan O'Brien also both finished with 16 points for Lehigh.

Army was 19-of-58 from the field (32.8%) and 7-of-22 from distance (31.8%).Trinity Hardy led Army with 22 points.

Basketball is a game of runs, and that's exactly what we saw on Wednesday, but the difference would be in the second half, where Lehigh's defense was able to stop the Black Knights.

Lehigh took a 15-8 lead after the first quarter. The Mountain Hawks continued to build their lead and would lead by as many as 13 in the second quarter after going on a 6-0 run to start the quarter. Despite the 13-point lead, the Black Knights went on a 22-8 run to close out the first half. Reese Ericson nailed a three-pointer with five seconds left to give Army its first lead of the game, 30-29 at halftime.

The Black Knights scored first in the second half, but it wouldn't matter as Lehigh outscored Army 32-17 in the third quarter. O'Brien knocked down a three-pointer as time expired to put Lehigh up 61-47 heading into the final frame. Lehigh led by as many as 19 in the fourth quarter, and Army went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 11, but the Mountain Hawks closed out the game on a 6-0 run.

Remi Sisselman and Whitney Lind both tallied six points. Lind also recorded a career-high five rebounds and a career-high two steals.

Next up, the Mountain Hawks host Lafayette on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Rivalry, presented by Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute.
