Lehigh's Comeback Falls Short in 54-49 Loss to Bucknell

2/14/2024 9:30:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh women's basketball's comeback fell just short to Bucknell Wednesday night at Stabler Arena as the Mountain Hawks suffered a 54-49 loss.

Lehigh dropped to 14-9 (6-6 PL), while the Bison moved to 9-15 (6-6 PL).

Ashley O'Connor nailed a jumper with 1:06 left in the third frame to put Bucknell up by 16 points, which would be the largest lead of the game for the Bison. Despite being down by 16 points, the Mountain Hawks rallied in the fourth and cut the lead down to two points with 3:37 remaining.

Ashley Sofilkanich immediately answered with a layup and a free throw to put Bucknell back up by five, and Lehigh was unable to get back in the game due to some big buckets by Sofilkanich down the stretch. Sofilkanich led the way with a double-double, recording 22 points and 15 rebounds.

"We showed a lot of fight all year, but too little too late," said head coach Addie Micir. "We're learning those lessons a lot. You have to give a lot of props to Bucknell. They were down a couple of players, and they were unphased by it. We have to turn it up a little bit earlier and give ourselves some time."

Three Mountain Hawks finished in double figures with Colleen McQuillen tallying 12 points and Ella Stemmer and Lily Fandre both recording 10.

Lehigh had its best shooting performance in the final frame after struggling offensively through the first three quarters. The Mountain Hawks made a quarter-high of five three-pointers and shot 50% from the field in the final 10 minutes.

Lehigh shot just 14.3% from the field in the first half after making four shots. Bucknell shot over 40%, but Lehigh limited the Bison to 28 points in the first half, while the Mountain Hawks had just 16.

Lehigh ended the game 15-of-53 from the field, (28.3%) and 8-of-29 from long range (27.6%).
Bucknell was 21-of-48 (43.8) and 2-of-12 from distance (16.7%). Lehigh's 23.8% shooting percentage marked a season-low for the Mountain Hawks.

Bucknell committed 18 turnovers to Lehigh's 10 turnovers, but Lehigh's poor shooting performance would be the difference on Wednesday. Lehigh also struggled from the charity stripe, going 11-of-17 (64.7%).

The Bison held a 40-30 advantage on the boards. Bucknell also had 28 points in the paint compared to Lehigh's 12 points. Meghan O'Brien tallied a team-high of eight rebounds.

The Mountain Hawks will head to Loyola on Sunday for a 2 p.m. battle against the Greyhounds. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with audio coverage on Fox Sports Radio 94.7 FM and 1230 AM in Easton.
