BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Fresh off a home win against Marist on Saturday, Lehigh men's basketball looked to make it two in a row at Stabler Arena on Wednesday evening as they welcomed the Monmouth Hawks. A stringent defensive effort and efficient night from the field guided the Mountain Hawks to a dominant 90-63 win.
Lehigh (3-5) and Monmouth (1-9) are common opponents, as the two have met consecutively every year since 2017 with the exception of the shortened 2020-21 season. The Mountain Hawks now hold an 8-6 advantage over the Hawks in the all-time series and avenged an 88-79 loss to Monmouth last season.
The Mountain Hawks began to build a strong lead early in the game, jumping ahead to a 14-4 lead through the first five minutes of play. Lehigh held Monmouth to just 16.6% (2-12) from the floor in that span and continued to lock down throughout the first half. The Hawks shot 22.6% (7-31) in the opening 20 minutes while Lehigh reached a 54.2% clip (13-24). The Hawks eventually brought the game within single digits at 17-10, but first-year Edouard Benoit went on a personal 7-0 run to extend the lead, highlighted by a four-point play with under ten to play in the half. Lehigh entered the locker room holding a 39-27 advantage.
After shooting the ball well in the first half, the Mountain Hawks' offense found another gear in the second. Lehigh outscored Monmouth 51-36 in the frame, shooting 58.6% (17-29) from the field and 54.5% (6-11) from three. Despite shooting under 30% from the floor in the second stanza, Monmouth sustained their offense by getting to the free throw line, shooting 18-24. Lehigh led by as many as 29 while 11 different Mountain Hawks found the back of the net in the second half. Lehigh's hot shooting night was capped off by a Peter Kramer three in the final minute of the game to give Lehigh its second 90+ point scoring output this season.
Lehigh outrebounded its opponent for the second-straight game, winning the battle on the boards 37-35. The Mountain Hawks shot 56.6% (30-53) from the field and 47.8% (11-23) from three for the game while holding the Hawks to 25.4% (15-59) and 26.3% (5-19). Lehigh also found great production from their bench, outscoring Monmouth 36-8 in that area.
Five Mountain Hawks reached double figures in Wednesday's win, led by a season-high 23 from senior Tyler Whitney-Sidney. The guard shot an efficient 9-13 from the field while tying his career-high of four made threes on the evening.
Senior Keith Higgins Jr. extended his double-digit scoring streak to seven games with 15 points in 32 minutes of action. Higgins also tallied four rebounds, two blocks and a steal while shooting a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line.
Reaching a new career-high was Benoit, who scored 14 points while making a career-best three triples.
First-year Hank Alvey recorded the second double-digit scoring game of his career, totaling 10 points on 5-6 shooting. Lehigh's final scorer in double figures was junior Bube Momah, who scored 10 points off the bench after scoring a team-high 15 in Saturday's win over Marist.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday, December 7 at 2 p.m. in Ohio for a date with the Dayton Flyers (RV). The game will be a homecoming for senior Ben Knostman, who attended nearby Tippecanoe High School.
