11/4/2024 11:04:00 PM | Men's Basketball
EVANSTON, Ill. – The 2024-25 college basketball season is officially underway, and the Lehigh Mountain Hawks kicked off their campaign on the road against the Northwestern Wildcats on Monday evening. A massive first half propelled the Wildcats to a 90-46 win over the Mountain Hawks in first game of the season.
Monday's game marked the third-ever meeting between Lehigh and Northwestern, with the most recent being a narrow 61-59 loss in the 2005-06 season. The Wildcats were the first of two Big Ten opponents on Lehigh's non-league schedule, as the Mountain Hawks will head to UCLA on November 15.
The Wildcats opened the game on a 9-0 run before senior Tyler Whitney-Sidney provided the first Mountain Hawk bucket of the season with a driving and-one layup. Northwestern was excellent offensively throughout the frame, posting shooting splits of 58.3% from the field and 46.6% from three. As sharp as the Wildcats were on offense, their defense was just as potent, holding Lehigh to under 20% from the floor in the first half. Northwestern entered the locker room with a 51-15 lead after 20 minutes.
The Mountain Hawks played a much more competitive second half, being outscored 39-31 in the frame. Nine different Lehigh student-athletes found the back of the net in the final 20 minutes, which included the first points in the careers of each of the team's four first-years.
Northwestern's Nick Martinelli was terrific for the Wildcats, scoring a game-high 26 points with 10 rebounds. Four other Wildcats also reached double-figures in the contest.
Lehigh was led offensively by sophomore Nasir Whitlock, who tallied 11 points, four assists and two steals on the night. He was joined in double-figures by Whitney-Sidney with 10.
First-year Hank Alvey, making a return to his home state of Illinois, recorded six points and three rebounds in his first collegiate start. First-year Edouard Benoit led the team with eight rebounds while first-year Peter Kramer knocked down a triple for his first-career points late in the second half.
The Mountain Hawks will hit the road again, traveling to Washington, D.C. to battle the Georgetown Hoyas on Wednesday, November 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in our nation's capital and can be watched on FS2 or listened to on Fox Sports Radio 94.7FM & 1230AM.
