11/19/2024 2:44:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh men's basketball is set to play their first game of the season inside Stabler Arena on Wednesday evening. The Mountain Hawks will play host to the Valley Forge Patriots at 7 p.m.
Prior to tip-off, both seniors Tyler Whitney-Sidney and Keith Higgins Jr. will be honored after becoming 1,000-point scorers for the program last season. Whitney-Sidney reached 1,000 on March 2 at home against Colgate while Higgins surpassed the mark on the road during Lehigh's Patriot League semifinal win over Boston U. on March 10.
Tuesday night's game will be the first-ever meeting between Lehigh (0-4) and Valley Forge (4-1). Should the Mountain Hawks win, they would earn their first win of the season and head coach Dr. Brett Reed would improve his record against non-Division-I opponents to 14-0.
Lehigh played its first four games of the season on the road, traveling to Northwestern, Georgetown, Columbia and UCLA. They most recently headed to Los Angeles to take on the Bruins on November 15, falling 85-45. Higgins was the game's leading scorer, posting 18 points in his homecoming to Southern California. The West Hills, Calif. native has scored 18 or more points in each of the past three games. He leads the team with a scoring average of 18.3 points per game while Whitney-Sidney also averages double figures at 10.8 per contest.
Valley Forge enters Wednesday's game with a 4-1 record after going 5-20 last season. The Patriots have already faced one Division-I program this season, falling 120-61 to UMBC on November 11. The loss credited on their record is to Washington College, who defeated Valley Forge 67-58. Before playing Lehigh on Wednesday, Valley Forge will face Neumann University on Tuesday and then play Manor College on Thursday in what will be a three-game stretch over three consecutive days for the Patriots. Yasir Rowell leads the Patriots in scoring at 22.3 points per game while Dashawn Goodine (15.0 ppg) and Christian Renninger (11.3 ppg) also average double figures.
Following Wednesday night's home opener, Lehigh will again hit the road to take on Saint Francis (Pa.) at 7 p.m. in Loretto, Pa.
