Slow Start Stifles Lehigh In Loss At West Virginia
11/9/2025 6:36:00 PM | Men's Basketball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Lehigh men's basketball played its third game of the opening week of the 2025-26 season on Sunday afternoon from Hope Coliseum against the West Virginia Mountaineers. A slow start in the first half for the Mountain Hawks propelled the Mountaineers past Lehigh 69-47.
"Tonight was a disappointing loss," said Murray H. Goodman '48 head coach Brett Reed. "I felt we turned the basketball over early, which put a lot of pressure on our defense. As we progressed and settled in, we were able to play more even with them, but we gave West Virginia too much of a head start in today's contest."
Lehigh (1-2) has now faced two Big 12 opponents on the season after opening the campaign against #2 Houston on Monday. The Mountain Hawks are now 1-6 all-time against West Virginia (3-0).
Both Lehigh and West Virginia scored on their opening possessions, keeping the game tied 2-2 through the first two minutes of action. The Mountaineers defense then took center stage, forcing 11 Lehigh turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. West Virginia combined their defensive prowess with a 53.6% field goal percentage to take a 42-20 lead into the half.
The Mountain Hawks found more of an offensive rhythm in the second half, cutting the lead to 16 through the first five minutes. Lehigh's early run was highlighted by a poster dunk from junior Joshua Ingram, who slammed over two defenders with both hands.

Later in the second half, Lehigh pulled closer after an Andrew Urosevic triple cut the lead to 14 with 6:46 to go. However, the Mountain Hawks' first half deficit was ultimately too much to overcome.
"We cut down on some of our defensive errors in the second half, and because our turnover numbers went down considerably, we gave ourselves more opportunities to score and didn't put as much pressure on our transition defense in the second half," said Reed.
Lehigh shot 34.8% (16-46) from the field, 33.3% (7-21) from three and 72.7% (8-11) from the free throw line in Sunday's loss. The Mountaineers posted shooting splits of 46.9% (23-49) from the field, 36.8% (7-19) from three and 64.0% (16-25) from the line. The Mountaineers outrebounded the Mountain Hawks 38-25 and outscored Lehigh in the paint 28-12.
Urosevic led the Mountain Hawks in scoring for the second straight game, adding 16 off the bench on 6-12 shooting and 4-8 from three. Ingram also reached double-digits with 14 points. Sophomore Hank Alvey led the team with eight rebounds and three assists.
"Andrew came in and gave us a big offensive boost," said Reed. "His ability to make shots on a night where we were struggling to score certainly helped us a great deal and settled us down."
The Mountaineers were led by Brenen Lorient with 26 points and seven rebounds while Harlan Obioha joined him in double-figures with 12 points.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Friday, November 14 at 6:30 p.m. on the road against Rutgers University.
"West Virginia was a strong, physical and athletic team," said Reed. "We're going to see some of those same elements against Rutgers, and I think we'll adapt well understanding some of things we need to work on from today against them."
