Lehigh Rallies in Fourth Quarter to Defeat Brown 62-55

11/17/2024 3:48:00 PM | Women's Basketball

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Down eight points after the third frame, Lehigh women's basketball used a 23-8 fourth quarter run to help come away with a 62-55 win over Brown Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Mountain Hawks improved to 3-1 with the win and the Bears dropped to 1–3.

"You have to give Brown a ton of credit," said head coach Addie Micir. "They are scrappy, they run really good stuff offensively to shake you loose and they go one-on-one and they have the ability to make shots. I also want to give them a lot of credit because before we went down, they went down. I love how our kids responded in the fourth quarter. It took a little bit, but we took a deep breath after the third quarter, we took care of the ball, rebounded defensively, and we made shots."

Fifth-year senior and reigning Patriot League Player of the Week Maddie Albrecht had another monster performance, recording the first double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Albrecht shot 7-of-11 (63%) from the field on Sunday.

"Maddie got quiet there a little bit in the third quarter, and she started passing when she should have been shooting, and we challenged her, and she came up big," Micir said. "She has the ability to play multiple positions for us and score around and over different types of players, and she turned it on, and that's what you need from a fifth-year."

Senior guard Ella Stemmer (15 points) and junior Lily Fandre (13 points) also finished in double figures.

Coming off of a 85-68 win over Northwestern, Lehigh continued its hot shooting to start the game. The Mountain Hawks started the game on a 13-2 run the first five minutes, forcing a timeout by Brown. The Bears started trimming down Lehigh's early lead as the Mountain Hawks held a 22-15 lead after the first 10 minutes.

Brown continued to put pressure on Lehigh's lead, outscoring the Mountain Hawks 14-10 in the second period. After the first 20 minutes of action, Lehigh led 33-29.

Mady Calhoun knocked down a three-pointer to extend an 8-0 run for Brown, giving the Bears a 41-38 lead, their first lead of the day with 4:57 left in the third quarter. Brown's Grace Arnolie netted a fast break layup, giving the Bears an eight-point lead, their largest lead of the day.

After Arnolie's layup with 1:21 remaining in the third frame, Lehigh responded with a 19-3 run in eight minutes of game time. Albrecht scored a layup with 6:51 remaining in the game to put Lehigh back on top, and the Mountain Hawks would remain in control for the remainder of the game.

The Mountain Hawks ended the game going 21-of-46 from the field (45.7%). Lehigh saved its best offensive performance for the final frame, going 7-of-9 (77.8%) from the field in the closing 10 minutes. One week after knocking down 18 three-pointers, the second-most in program history, Lehigh struggled from beyond the arc, going 2-of-11 from deep. Stemmer had both of Lehigh's three-pointers.

Lehigh held Brown to 20-of-68 shooting from the field (29.4%). Brown had 22 more possessions than Lehigh as the Bears held a 14-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. Both teams corralled 37 rebounds on Sunday. Brown was led by Gia Powell, who finished with a game-high 18 points.

Senior forward Meghan O'Brien also chipped in six points for Lehigh. Sophomore guard Gracyn Lovette was huge on the defensive end, recording a career-high seven rebounds while also corralling a block and a steal. Lovette's block came at a crucial time in the fourth quarter as Lehigh held a six-point lead with 2:24 remaining in the game.

"Gracyn is an absolute menace," Micir said. "She is so fast and even more important than that, she is locked into what we are doing. She is really intentional with how she uses her speed, so she can cover a lot of ground quickly. When she is on the floor, she makes us better."

Next up, the Mountain Hawks will return to Stabler Arena on Friday at 6 p.m. when they host Hofstra. Friday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
