Lehigh's Unbeaten Streak Snapped to Loyola

BALTIMORE - Lehigh men's soccer's five-game unbeaten streak was snapped Saturday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks fell 4-1 to Loyola at the Ridley Athletic Complex. Lehigh dropped to 5-7-3 (3-2-1 PL) and the Greyhounds improved to 4-6-3 (3-2-1 PL).
"I thought for the first 50-60 minutes we played well, and we played the way we wanted to until we gave up the second goal and lost some momentum from there," said head coach Dean Koski.
Loyola went into halftime with a 1-0 lead on a goal from Jake Sweeney in the 17th minute and while first-year Aiden Gonzalez netted the equalizer in the 52nd minute, the Greyhounds completely dominated the final 38 minutes of the game, outscoring Lehigh 3-0. Sam Davis and Giacomo Zizza were both credited with an assist on Gonzalez's goal.Â
Jordy Luchies gave Loyola the 2-1 lead in the 58th minute on a shot that was near midfield and then the Greyhounds had all the momentum from there. Caden Stafford scored the insurance goal in the 63rd minute and Tyler Flynn scored the fourth and final goal for the Greyhounds in the 85th minute, which put the game away.Â
Loyola held an 18-13 advantage in shots, an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Perry Kingson and Zizza led the way for Lehigh with two shots apiece.
Senior goalkeeper Ryan Gross tallied a game-high of four saves in net. Loyola's Dylan van der Walt recorded two saves.Â
"Every game for us from here on in is a playoff game" Koski said. "We have to get points to find our way into the Patriot League Tournament. We don't take for granted our start. They know the league is hard, and we need to have a good week of training leading into this week."Â
Next up, the Mountain Hawks will host Navy on Senior Night on Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Saturday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+.Â
