BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh men's soccer picked up its second straight win, defeating Marist 2-1 Tuesday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. With the win, Lehigh improved to 4-6-1, which surpasses its win total from last season. The Red Foxes dropped to 3-6.
"These are hard games to play midweek for both teams," said head coach Dean Koski. "We have some guys that have heavy legs and are sick. We had to sit two guys due to yellow cards, so we weren't our full selves tonight, but for us to grind out a really tough result against a good team who is wanting to do the same thing is awesome. I'm happy for the guys."
Lehigh had to come from behind as Marist netted the opening goal in the 17th minute after Richard Morel grabbed a loose ball on a shot from Arion Ulaj that senior goalkeeper Blake Koski originally saved.
The Red Foxes did not hold their lead for long as Perry Kingson found an open Beckett Wenger, who put the ball right on target for the goal in the 23rd minute.
Kingson, who was named the Patriot League Midfielder of the Week on Sept. 30, continued to dominate on Tuesday, as he also scored the game-winning goal off of a penalty kick in the 85th minute. Lehigh was awarded the penalty kick after Marist was called for a handball in the box.Â
"This season was going to be one where we needed to score by a committee -Â not just one guy," Koski said."I think there is more value and opportunity because it is easier to neutralize one goal scorer than a group of players who can score."
Koski finished with a game-high of three saves and Dreni Idrizi did not make any saves for the Red Foxes. Marist held a 15-11 advantage in shots, a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.Â
Kingson recorded a game-high of four shots.Â
The Mountain Hawks will continue league play when they travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to face Bucknell on Saturday at 7 p.m. Saturday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
