Bailey's Runner-Up Finish Paces Lehigh At F&M Open
1/5/2024 8:11:00 PM | Men's Wrestling
LANCASTER, Pa. – Sophomore Carter Bailey reached the finals at 141 pounds to lead a 12-wrestler Lehigh contingent Friday at the David H. Lehman F&M Open, held at the Alumni Sports & Fitness Center. Bailey won his first five bouts before suffering defeat in the finals. He was one of three Lehigh wrestlers to earn a place in the top six as the Mountain Hawks had eight attached wrestlers and four unattached wrestlers in the day-long event.
Â
Bailey reached the finals with a win by defensive fall over Maryland's Kal Miller in the semifinals. Trailing by one point in the second half of the tiebreaker, Bailey went headhunting with the referee calling the defensive pin at 9:39. In the finals, Bailey ran into Wyatt Henson of Lock Haven, who claimed a 14-4 major decision to win the title.
Â
In the quarterfinal round, Bailey faced teammate Connor McGonagle, who was competing for the first time this season up at 141. McGonagle won his first three bouts Friday but it was Bailey converting a takedown in sudden victory to earn the 4-1 victory in the all-Lehigh bout. McGonagle forfeited his next consolation match and officially finished the day with a 3-1 record.
Â
Lehigh's other two place winners came at 149 with deferred first-year Kelvin Griffin placing sixth and true first-year Matt Repos claiming fifth place. Repos led the way for Lehigh's four unattached wrestlers, going 4-1 with a fall. The only blemish was a one-point quarterfinal loss to Army's Matt Williams.
Â
Griffin also reached the quarterfinals and went 5-1 with three falls and five bonus-point wins. The fifth place bout with Repos was not contested as Griffin reached his six-bout limit for the day.
Â
Ten of Lehigh's 12 entrants on the day won at least one bout.
Â
At 165, sophomore Connor Herceg reeled off five consecutive victories after an opening round loss before reaching his match limit for the day.
Â
Deferred first-year Remy Brancato went 3-2 at 184 while deferred first-year Dontae Hoose and junior Karam Chakif both went 1-2 at 197 and 285, respectively. True first-year Liam Gil-Swiger also competed at 165.
Â
Lehigh's three other unattached entrants were first-year Logan Wadle, who went 0-2 at 125, Richie Grungo, who went 2-2 at 157, and Zeke Dubler who went 1-2 with a fall at 174.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will resume dual action next weekend when Lehigh hosts EIWA rivals Binghamton and Cornell, Jan. 12-13 inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Tickets to all remaining home duals can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-758-4263 during business hours.
