Lehigh Snaps Holy Cross's Nine-Game Win Streak

1/27/2024 5:42:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - For the second straight season, Lehigh women's basketball knocked off an undefeated Patriot League Holy Cross team. The Mountain Hawks defeated the Crusaders 70-60 Saturday afternoon at Stabler Arena in Lehigh's 3's For a Cure game, presented by Red Robin in partnership with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Lehigh has won its last two league games to improve to 12-7 (4-4 PL), while Holy Cross dropped to 13-6 (7-1). Holy Cross won its last nine games before Saturday's loss.

"Holy Cross is a really good team," said head coach Addie Micir. "They're an experienced team, and they make comebacks like that all the time, but I'm so proud of our players. They stuck with the game-plan, and we had a lot of different people step up in a lot of different ways. That's what you need to beat a really good team."

Three players finished in double figures led by Maddie Albrecht, who recorded 17 points, six rebounds and two assists. Albrecht has now scored in double figures in five straight games.

Meghan O'Brien tallied 15 points and six rebounds. The junior forward was also 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. O'Brien's four three-pointers are also a career-high.

"I'm really proud of Meghan O'Brien," Micir said. "That kid shoots the lights out in practice all the time, and her stats in games haven't quite been there yet, but we've encouraged her to keep shooting, and her teammates kept finding her team tonight. "

Lily Fandre recorded the second double-double of her career after scoring 11 points and corralling a career-high of 14 rebounds.

Kaylee Van Eps was just one point away from scoring in double figures as she scored a season-high of nine points.

The Mountain Hawks opened the game on a 5-0 run, but Holy Cross would score the next six points. Kaylee Van Eps made a three-pointer to put Lehigh up 8-6 with 5:05 remaining in the first quarter, and the Mountain Hawks would not lose their lead from there.

Lehigh used a 10-0 run in the first frame to take a 20-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Crusaders cut Lehigh's lead to six in the second frame, but the Mountain Hawks would continue to build their lead to take a 37-26 lead at halftime. Part of Lehigh's early lead was due to shooting 53% from the field. Holy Cross shot just 37.5% from the field in the first half.

The Mountain Hawks scored the first six points of the second half to take a 17-point lead. Holy Cross didn't score in the second half until the 5:42 mark.

Maddie Albrecht scored a layup with 30 seconds remaining in the third to put Lehigh up 54-31. Lehigh's 23-point lead would be the largest lead of the game. Janelle Allen scored a bucket with 13 seconds left in the game to cut Lehigh's lead to 54-33 at the end of the third.

The Crusaders used a 16-5 run in the fourth quarter to help them stay in the game. Holy Cross cut Lehigh's lead to seven points multiple times down the stretch, but the Mountain Hawks would have an answer every time. While Lehigh did not shoot a single free throw in the first half, the Mountain Hawks made seven free throws in the final two minutes to help secure the victory.

Kaitlyn Flanagan and Bronagh Power-Cassidy both recorded 13 points to lead the way for the Crusaders.

Lehigh held a 38-28 advantage on the glass. The Mountain Hawks were 24-of-49 from the field (49%) and 11-of-26 from the three-point line (42.3%). Holy Cross was 24-of-65 from the field (36.9%) and 7-of-21 from beyond the arc (33.3%).

Next up, the Mountain Hawks will hit the road when they travel to Annapolis, Md., on Wednesday to face Navy at 7 p.m.
