Mountain Hawks Denied 10th Straight Victory over Midshipmen

1/31/2024 10:04:00 PM | Women's Basketball

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Trying to capture its third straight victory and 10th consecutive win over Navy, the Lehigh women's basketball was stopped short, falling 62-45  Wednesday night at Alumni Hall.

The Mountain Hawks are 12-8 (4-5 PL), while Navy is 6-14 (2-7 PL).

"I thought Navy played fearless," said head coach Addie Micir. " They really caused some chaos, and we looked like we weren't ready to handle it, so that's on us to be better, but you have to give Navy a lot of credit. They got downhill on us, and their rookie guards really played well and finished well. With that, we have to be ready to play and handle some pressure and not turn the ball over as much."

Navy gave Lehigh everything it could handle. The tandem duo of first-year guards Zanai Barnett-Gay and Kyah Smith led the way with 21 points and 19 points, respectively. The duo hit 18 of Navy's 27 field goals. The Midshipmen were 27-of-68 from the field (39.7%). and the Mountain Hawks were 16-of-51 (31.4%).

Turnovers played a role in tonight's game as the Mountain Hawks had 19 turnovers to Navy's nine.

Lehigh struggled to find its momentum right from the start. Toini Papharonis hit a free throw to give Navy a 6-5 lead with 6:49 left, and the Midshipmen would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the game. Lehigh was held to four made field goals in all four quarters.

Reigning Patriot League Player of the Week Maddie Albrecht recorded the first double double of her career, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Albrecht scored 10 of those 12 points in the first half. Five of her points were also the first five points of the night for the Mountain Hawks.

Lily Fandre tallied the second straight double-double and third of her career after recording 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Midshipmen took an early 17-10 lead after the first quarter and continued to build their lead, holding a 33-22 lead at the half. The Midshipmen opened the third quarter on an 8-0 run. Jessie Ozzauto stopped the three minute scoring drought with a basket and a free throw.

The Mountain Hawks would go on to score five consecutive points after Ozzauto's three-point play, which sparked a timeout by Navy after Lehigh cut Navy's lead back to 12 points. Navy ended the quarter on a 11-0 run to go back up by 17 points heading into the final frame.

The Midshipmen continued to dominate in the fourth quarter, scoring seven straight points to go up by 24 points, which would be the largest lead of the night. Lehigh held Navy  to just one bucket in the final five minutes, but it would be too little too late.

Ozzauto, Whitney Lind and Meghan O'Brien all finished with five points.

'We have to be better," Micir said. "Point blank, our preparation has to be better, and our mindset has to be better."

Lehigh will host its National Girls and Women in Sports Day game on Saturday against Boston University at 2 p.m.
