BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Two former Lehigh swimmers have taken their talents from the pool to writing. Dr. CJ Smiley, who was known as Calvin John Smiley at Lehigh and Madeleine Foley, who was known as Maddy Smith at Lehigh, have both recently come out with new books.Â
Smiley received his bachelor of arts from Lehigh University in africana studies and political science in 2008 and a master's from Lehigh in political science in 2009. Smiley received his Ph. D. from the City University of New York.
Smiley is the author of Purgatory Citizenship: Reentry, Race and Abolition. Smiley's book examines how individuals return to society and how they navigate and negotiate this process with diminished legal rights and amplified social stigmas. To buy Smiley's book, you can click here:
While this is Smiley's first book as the sole author, he also co-wrote Prisoner Reentry in the 21st century: Critical Perspectives of Returning Home.
When he's not writing books, Smiley can also be found teaching. Smiley is an associate professor in sociology at Hunter College in New York.
Foley is the author of The Foreboding, which speaks to new adults and mature adults who want to grapple with the power of the human mind and the natural world in a new way.
"My hope is that, in reading this book, you will discover the beautiful feeling of getting lost in a world that is pushing the limits of reality we know today," wrote Foley. "I want you to see this book as an opportunity to open your mind, escape from the assumptions we make about our minds, learn alongside Shiloh about the importance of self-confidence, family and finding your own strength."
Foley graduated with a bachelor of arts in cognitive science and science writing in 2015. In 2016, she received her master's from Lehigh in healthcare systems engineering.
While Foley's main job isn't to write, she used to be a sports reporter for The Brown and White. Foley is currently the senior manager of strategic relationships/senior project manager at United Healthcare.Â
