PHILADELPHIA – The Lehigh men's rowing team competed in the 40th annual Murphy Cup hosted by Temple at the East Park Canoe House on the Schuylkill River on Saturday, earning a fifth-place finish.

The first-varsity boat earned second place in their heat, finishing in 6:00.77, nine seconds behind LaSalle who finished first. The Mountain Hawks finished in front of Loyola (Md.) and Colgate, who were just two and three seconds behind.

"1v battled through a tough heat and got the tight racing experience we came for, commented the Steven J. '69 & Karen A. Lee Head Rowing Coach Peter Costas. "They race intensely at practice, and I'd credit their comeback in the heat to the challenges they've been getting each day at practice."

First-year Max O'Meara stated, "We found speed and walked on crews during our heat race."

Senior J.P Neubert had this to say following the races, "Today was a great opportunity to line up against a variety of crews and get a couple of reps in in a single day. The boat found some stride in the first piece and felt strong coming across the line. The finals were a reminder that there is work to be done before the MARC, but it is clear the team is ready to work. Overall, it was a beautiful day to race and the team was ready to compete."

In the second-varsity race, Lehigh finished in fourth with a time of 6:21.16, finishing behind LaSalle, host Temple and Saint Joseph's.

Costas added, "2v raced a tough draw on heats and shows continued progress."

"We faced a few new teams today and got some good experience in. Definitely work to be done on our sprint," stated sophomore Joseph Carruth

"The depth and competitiveness on the men's roster is on a great track. I think they know they're just scratching the surface of gelling as lineups to find another gear. I am excited to see it," concluded Costas.
