Mountain Hawks Complete Series Sweep of Army West Point With Two Win Saturday

4/22/2023 6:00:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team completed a three-game sweep of Army West Point by winning the final two games of the series Saturday at Leadership Park. Junior Brooke Cannon's three-run double in a four-run sixth inning lifted the Mountain Hawks to a 4-1 win in game one. Lehigh then built a 6-0 lead in game two and went on to win 6-2.

The top three hitters in Lehigh's lineup: graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich and seniors Josie Charles and Emily Cimino all picked up three hits on the day as Lehigh improves to 34-10 overall and remains undefeated in Patriot League play at 12-0. The Mountain Hawks remain tied at the top of the Patriot League standings with Boston University with two weekends of league play remaining.

In game one Army went in front in the top of the third inning when Angelina Bebek doubled home Brook Mitchell.

Army starter Alicyn Grete held Lehigh without a hit through 4.2 innings before first-year Sydney Parlett singled up the middle in the fifth.

Lehigh's go-ahead rally in the sixth was similar to its seventh inning rally in Friday's series opener. Sophomore Lindsey Martin led off with a single and Barjaktarovich and Charles followed with base hits. With two on and one out, Cimino singled home Martin with the tying run. First-year Lily Owens reached on an error to load the bases before Cannon cleared the bases with a double to deep center field with the three runs putting Lehigh up 4-1.

Junior Katelyn Young retired the leadoff batter in the seventh and after Mitchell reached base, first-year Chloe Hess came out of the bullpen to record the final two outs and earn her fifth save of the season.

Young improved to 16-5 allowing a run on eight hits in 6.1 innings with four strikeouts and no walks.

Lehigh had six hits over its final two turns at bat.

The Mountain Hawks jumped in front in game two as consecutive two-out doubles by Barjaktarovich and Charles gave Lehigh a 1-0 lead after three innings. Junior Amanda Greaney delivered a two-out, two-run double in the fourth to extend the Mountain Hawks' lead to 3-0 and Cimino tripled in the fifth to score Barjaktarovich to put Lehigh up 4-0.

Lehigh added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth as Martin executed a squeeze bunt to bring home sophomore Rory Dudley and then Parlett scored when Barjaktarovich reached on an error.

Hess started game two in the circle and went six-plus innings allowing two runs on six hits. She walked two and struck out three. Army put together a rally in the seventh but Young came on to record the final three outs.

Lehigh's top three all went 2-for-4 in game two with Barjaktarovich scoring two runs.

The Mountain Hawks will head to Saint Joseph's for a single game Wednesday at 4 p.m. before heading to Holy Cross for three games next weekend.
