Troyan Picks Up 900th Career Win As Lehigh Rolls Past Saint Joseph's 13-3

4/26/2023 5:55:00 PM | Softball

MERION STATION, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back as the Mountain Hawks defeated Saint Joseph's 13-3 Wednesday afternoon at SJU Softball Field.

The Mountain Hawks pounded out 15 hits in the victory, which is the 900th in Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan's career. Graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich went 3-for-5 while sophomore Rory Dudley added two hits and three RBIs. Barjaktarovich and Dudley were two of the six Mountain Hawks to have two or more hits on Wednesday.

Troyan, who is in his 28th season, now owns a 900-502-7 career record. Lehigh improves to 35-10 on the season.

Lehigh wasted little time Wednesday as Barjaktarovich led off the game with a single and came around to score on a double by senior Josie Charles. Senior Emily Cimino then tripled to left, scoring Charles to put Lehigh up 2-0. First-year Lily Owens followed with a sacrifice fly to score Cimino and put the Mountain Hawks up three. Dudley capped the inning with a solo home run to left, her fourth of the season, as Lehigh led 4-0 before the Hawks came to bat.

Saint Joseph's (15-27) countered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning but Lehigh added to its lead with two in the third as Owens scored on a throwing error after stealing third and first-year Sydney Parlett brought home another run with an RBI ground out.

A solo home run by Kaelin Cash brought the Hawks within 6-3 but Lehigh broke the game open with three runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh.

Junior Katelyn Young started in the pitcher's circle and helped herself with a two-run single in the fifth. Charles drew a bases loaded walk to extend Lehigh's advantage to 9-3 heading to the bottom of the fifth.

Dudley singled home two more runs in the seventh and the Mountain Hawks scored their final two runs when Parlett reached on Saint Joseph's' fourth error of the game.

Young went four innings allowing three runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. She added two hits at the plate and improves to 17-5 on the season. First-year Chloe Hess came on to throw three scoreless innings to earn her program-record sixth save of the season. Hess allowed just one hit and struck out four of the 10 batters she faced.

Expected inclement weather has forced schedule changes for Lehigh's key Patriot League series at Holy Cross this weekend. The Mountain Hawks and Crusaders will now play a single game Friday at 4:30 p.m. followed by a doubleheader Saturday at a time still to be determined at Freshman Field in Worcester, Mass.
