Lehigh Makes Positive Strides In Action Against Loyola, ODU

BALTIMORE – The Lehigh women's rowing team continued its spring campaign Saturday as the Mountain Hawks raced against Loyola and Old Dominion at the Baltimore Rowing and Water Resource Center. It was a productive day for the Mountain Hawks as the Varsity Four and Second Varsity Eight boats picked up first place finishes, while the First Varsity Eight finished second.

"This race was another great step for our team," said Steven J. '69 & Karen A. Lee Head Rowing Coach Peter Costas. "I'm proud that everyone showed up to race hard."

The Varsity Four started the day with a first place finish with a time of 8:50.21, followed by Loyola (9:14.76) and ODU (9:24.39).

"The Varsity Four set a great tone for the day," Costas said. "I was excited to see Kendall work her magic on a young lineup and keep them steady after an aggressive start. They had such a positive impact on the entire team."

Lehigh also received a strong showing from the Second Varsity Eight boat, which won its race in 7:37.96, followed by ODU (7:55.21) and Loyola (8:35.81).

"The Second Varsity Eight took a huge step forward this week in practice and are racing with more confidence every day," Costas said. "Senior Caitlin Stoddard gives that group a lot of steadiness in pressure situations like today. Very proud of the work she's put in this year to get back from injury and fulfill an important leadership role on the team."

The First Varsity Eight race was tightly-contested with Old Dominion edging the Mountain Hawks by less than a second. The Monarchs finished at 7:10.85, with Lehigh at 7:11.59. Loyola finished in third position.

"That was a great battle," Costas said of the First Varsity Eight race. "Our lineup showed great grit and toughness. It's always tough to come up behind by a small margin, but the lasting impression for the group was how well they continue to meet the next challenge. They battled two tough boats and had a necessary response every time they needed it in a critical moment."

Costas concluded, "I'm thrilled by the gutsy racing across the board and excited to see this team continue to grow and develop speed."

The Mountain Hawks will compete against Bucknell, April 22 on the Susquehanna River in Shamokin Dam, Pa.
