BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh men's lacrosse team pulled out a nail-biting 14-13 win over Binghamton that came down to the wire at Frank Banko Field Tuesday night.Â
Lehigh improved to 4-1 overall, and Binghamton dropped to 3-2. The Mountain Hawks secured their second straight win after defeating Navy in the Patriot League opener last Saturday.
Lehigh came out of the gates with a fast start. The Mountain Hawks scored the first four goals of the game. Justin Tiernan netted the first two, and Scott Cole and Freddie Amato scored the other two goals.
'Overall, the team was excellent in the early going," said head coach Kevin Cassese. "We were up 7-1 at the end of the first quarter, and I thought our guys were ready to play. I thought we played our brand of ball and thought that was great. I didn't know what to expect coming off of a big Patriot League win on Saturday."
Binghamton got on the board with 5:26 left in the first quarter. The Mountain Hawks went on another 3-0 run to take an 8-1 lead with 14:10 left in the first half.
In the second quarter, Binghamton started to find a groove, but Scott Cole kept the Mountain Hawks in front. He scored four goals in the second quarter. He finished with a career-high of seven goals to pace the way for Lehigh on Tuesday. His previous career-high was four goals. The junior also picked up three ground balls.Â
At the half, Lehigh had a 13-6 lead.
The Bearcats came out storming in the second half. Binghamton scored four goals in the third quarter and held Lehigh scoreless for the entire third quarter.
"The finish was tough, and that was not ideal," Cassese said. "I also think that had a lot to do with Binghamton. I thought they did a good job in the second half with making some adjustments that frustrated us on offense and were able to play a lot of offense themselves in the first half."
Scott Cole scored his seventh goal in the game with 12:00 left in the game, which would also end up being the game-winner as Binghamton cut the deficit to one. The Bearcats had an opportunity to win the game after tying it up at 13. Lehigh committed a turnover, and Binghamton got it back and called a timeout, but the Bearcats didn't net the equalizer.Â
"Scott Cole had a big night for sure," Cassese said. "I thought we were able to get him involved early and often, and I thought our offense, in general, was clicking early."
Mike Sisselberger was 16-of-29 at the stripe on Tuesday. It was a fairly close game with Lehigh having 35 shots to Bingahmton's 37, but the Mountain Hawks had 20 turnovers compared to the Bearcats' 15.
Junior goalie Nick Pecora, who is coming off Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week honors finished with 14 saves, and Binghamton's Connor Winters had 12 saves.
Binghamton's Thomas Greenblatt and Gage Adams both recorded five points.
The Mountain Hawks will look to capture their third straight win when they head to Worcester, Mass, to take on Holy Cross on Saturday at 2 pm.
"I call this a players' week," Cassese said. You've got three games in eight days. That's why you play Division I lacrosse - to play as many games as possible."
