Lehigh Advances Four To EIWA Semifinals, Mountain Hawks Sit In Second Place

3/4/2023 8:40:00 PM | Men's Wrestling

PHILADELPHIA – Day one at the 119th EIWA Championships saw Lehigh place eight wrestlers in the top eight, with four Mountain Hawks keeping their individual title hopes alive by reaching the championship semifinals. All 10 Lehigh entrants won at least one bout Saturday at the Palestra while nine of the 10 scored at least one bonus point.

The Mountain Hawks finished day one with 68.5 points, good for second place. Cornell leads the team standings with 82.5, while Penn is third with 67.

Lehigh's four semifinalists are senior Josh Humphreys (157), graduate student Tate Samuelson (184), sophomore Michael Beard (197) and deferred first-year Nathan Taylor (285).

Taylor was the lone Mountain Hawk to earn automatic NCAA qualification on Saturday, doing so in dramatic fashion with a sudden victory takedown in the quarterfinals to defeat Penn's Ben Goldin 3-1, avenging a loss to the Quaker earlier this year. Taylor also posted a first period pin in the opening round against Columbia's Billy McChesney and is guaranteed a top six place at 285. He will face top seed Yaraslau Slavikouski of Harvard in Sunday's semifinals.

Humphreys' bid for a third EIWA title began with a first period pin of F&M's Nick Alvarez, followed by a major decision over Nick Palumbo of Sacred Heart. The No. 2 seed at 157, Humphreys will face No. 6 Trevor Tarsi of Harvard in the semifinals.

Samuelson is now a five-time conference place winner, adding EIWA top six to his four Big 12 placings. He beat Cornell's Christian Hansen by major decision in the round of 16 and then used a third period takedown to defeat Penn's Maximus Hale 4-2. Next up for Samuelson is the No. 5 seed Nate Dugan of Princeton.

Beard reaches the semifinals in his first EIWA appearance with a first period pin and an injury default victory. In the semifinals, Beard will face Jacob Koser from Navy.

Lehigh went 8-2 in the championship round of 16 but then dropped its first four quarterfinal matches.

At 125 first-year Carter Bailey won by technical fall over Franklin & Marshall's Mason Leiphart before running into Princeton's NCAA finalist Pat Glory in the quarterfinals. A 12-1 major decision over Maximillian Leete of American secures a top eight finish for Bailey, who can qualify for NCAAs Sunday with a win over No. 6 seed Ethan Berginc of Army West Point.

Sophomore Connor McGonagle posted a second period pin in the opening round at 133 but went down with an injury while trying to finish a takedown in the first period of his quarterfinal bout with Navy's Brendan Ferretti. McGonagle was forced to default with his injury and medically forfeited out of the tournament.

At 141, sophomore Malyke Hines bounced back from a quarterfinal loss to Columbia's Matt Kazimir by posting an 11-1 major decision over Harvard's Joseph Cangro. A six-point reversal in the third period by Kazimir was the difference in Hines' 8-4 quarterfinal loss.

Sophomore Max Brignola dropped a one-point heartbreaker to Columbia's Danny Fongaro in the quarters before bouncing back with a 4-1 win over Pat Ryan of American to stay alive at 149.

Lehigh's eighth place winner is sophomore Jake Logan, who bounced back from an opening round loss to Army's Ben Pasiuk to win two bouts Saturday evening. Logan majored American's Lucas White and then edged Kole Mulhauser of Princeton 3-2, avenging a loss three weeks ago.

Connor Herceg went 1-2 as Lehigh's entrant at 165 but did pick up a bonus point win, using a late takedown and four-point near fall to secure a 16-5 major over Aidan Zarrella of Sacred Heart in the first round of consolations.

The EIWA Championships conclude Sunday from the Palestra. Session three, featuring the championship semifinals, consolation quarterfinals and semifinals and seventh place matches, is set for 10:30 a.m. while the finals session, featuring matches for first, third, and fifth, will begin at 4:30 p.m. Streaming coverage for the entire tournament will be available via FloWrestling.org.
