Lehigh Earns a Pair of Second-Place Finishes at Bucknell

SHAMOKIN DAM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's rowing squad opened its season with the first competitive race of the year on the Susquehanna River against host Bucknell and Washington College on Friday evening.

"Big thanks to Bucknell and our parents for making the weather reschedule happen, commented the
Steven J. '69 & Karen A. Lee Head Rowing Coach Peter Costas.

The Mountain Hawks' first race of the season was supposed to be last weekend but the weather shifted Lehigh to reschedule with Bucknell to tonight. The race was originally scheduled for Saturday, but the weather again moved the race to this evening.

"It elevated our focus this off-season to know we had an early challenge on the schedule," stated Costas.

The varsity race was the first event of the night, with the lineup as follows:
Coxswain: Abe Berlin
8: Joseph Carruth - Sophomore
7: Max O'Meara – First-year
6: Max McFadden – Senior
5: Pat Flynn – First-year
4: Zac Wexler – First-year
3: Baxter Reihman – Junior
2: Derek Hammerstone – Sophomore
1: Andrew Kammer - Senior

Bucknell came out on top in a time of 6:10.9 while the Mountain Hawks finished in second place just a little under five seconds behind the Bison, 6:15.8. Washington College finished out the varsity race in third place with a time of 7:39.3.

"In the varsity race, we came out of the gate a little tight but settled in well for the last 1250m. It was clear that Abe (Berlin) called a great race for them and got the boat back on a better track. They raced tough with control and showed nice responses in a difficult spot," commented Costas.

The second varsity race concluded the night, with the following lineup:
Coxswain: Schuyler Joerger - Junior
8: Sam Jones – Sophomore
7: Charles Miles – First-year
6: J.P. Neubert – Senior
5: Josh Bellon – Senior
4: William Snider – First-year
3: Ethan Hempel – Graduate Student
2: David Huang – First-year
1: Henry Vietor – First-year

The Brown and White's second varsity eight also earned a second-place finish with a time of 6:30.3 with Bucknell coming out on top in 6:20.4. The Bison third varsity boat finished a second behind the Mountain Hawks for third place.

"The 2v came out aggressively and showed solid grit," added Costas. "Tough to be back on the same course matched up against 2 boats that had finished in front of them in our October race. We got a lot from our senior leadership from Ethan, Josh, and JP right from the on-land warmups to take on the challenge."

Next up, the Mountain Hawks will race in the Murphy Cup, hosted by Temple on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia on Saturday, April 8.
