BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh junior Katelyn Young has been named Patriot League Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Young fired a pair of shutouts in four appearances last week, including her first career no-hitter in Lehigh's 2-0 win over Monmouth in the Mountain Hawks' home opener last Wednesday.
This is the second Pitcher of the Week award for Young in the 2023 season.
Young appeared in all four of Lehigh's games last week, going 3-0 with a save and a 1.09 ERA. On Wednesday, Young faced one batter over the minimum in no-hitting Monmouth for the first no-hitter for the Mountain Hawks since Emily Sorem no-hit Holy Cross on April 27, 2019. She struck out six and did not walk a batter.
Two days later, Young fired another shutout, a four-hitter as Lehigh opened Patriot League play with a 2-0 win at rival Lafayette. She struck out eight and walked one in her third complete-game shutout of the 2023 campaign.
On Sunday, Young pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save in Lehigh's 5-3 victory over the Lafayette in the first game of a doubleheader and then threw 4.1 innings in game two, earning her third win of the week in the Mountain Hawks' 5-4 triumph, completing a 4-0 week and a series sweep of the rival Leopards.
Young's first 19 innings pitched last week were scoreless and the left-hander finished with 19 strikeouts and three walks in 19.1 innings of work.
For the season, Young is now 12-3 and has lowered her ERA to 1.75. Young has struck out a team-leading 73 batters in a team-best 92 innings of work.
Senior outfielder Josie Charles garnered honorable mention recognition after leading Lehigh at the plate last week. Charles batted .500 (7-for-14) with three runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases. She went 5-for-7 in Sunday's doubleheader sweep with two runs scored and a key RBI single in game two.
Lehigh (22-6) opens a five-game homestand on Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks welcome Penn to Leadership Park for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
Charles leads the Mountain Hawks with a .451 batting average and 41 hits. Graduate student shortstop Carley Barjaktarovich is next at .340. The duo has also combined for 25 of Lehigh's 51 stolen bases this season. Senior Emily Cimino has been the top run producer, with 10 doubles, six home runs and 27 RBIs to go along with a .326 batting average.
Penn brings a 2-22 record into Wednesday's doubleheader. The Quakers swept a doubleheader at Maryland Eastern Shore last Wednesday for their first wins of the season, then dropped three Ivy League games at Dartmouth over the weekend.
Sarah Schneider leads Penn at the plate with a .356 batting average, 10 doubles, two home runs and 13 RBIs. Rachel Riley and Kelly Zybura have shared the brunt of innings in the pitcher's circle.
Lehigh leads the all-time series 43-23-2 and swept a doubleheader last year in Philadelphia, winning game one 9-6 and game two 15-1 in five innings.
Following Wednesday's doubleheader, Lehigh will host Bucknell in a three-game Patriot League series Saturday and Sunday.
