Lehigh Falls to No. 3/4 Cornell in First Loss of the Season

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Lehigh men's lacrosse team fell 12-5 to No. 3/4 Cornell, Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field.Â
This was Lehigh's first loss of the year after winning the first two games of the season. The Big Red are 2-0 after defeating Albany last week and winning their home opener against the Mountain Hawks on Saturday.
It was a close game to start out. Cornell's Billy Coyle notched the first goal of the game with 13:40 left in the first quarter. Ben Weinberg tied things at one, less than a minute later.Â
Both teams would go on their own run. Cornell scored three straight goals and then so did Lehigh. After Quinn Armstrong scored with 12:24 left in the first half to tie things at five, Cornell took over.
Lehigh was held scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Big Red scored four goals in less than 12 minutes in the first half to take a 9-5 lead at halftime.
Cornell continued its run into the third quarter, scoring the final three goals of the game.Â
Lehigh struggled to take care of the ball on Saturday, turning it over 26 times. Fifteen of those were caused by the Big Red. Cornell committed 14 of its own turnovers. Eight were caused by the Mountain Hawks. First-year Richard Checo had six of Lehigh's eight caused turnovers.
Despite Lehigh winning most of the faceoffs, the momentum didn't carry over into the offensive end. Mike Sisseleberger finished the day winning 14-of-20 faceoffs, while Cornell only won six faceoffs. Sisselberged also picked up eight ground balls for Lehigh.Â
Billy Coyle and CJ Kirst both recorded four points for Cornell.Â
Junior goalie Nick Pecora recorded a career-high of 13 saves on Saturday. Quinn Armstrong led the team with two goals after missing the first two games of the season. Christian Mule' and Matt Marker also scored for the Mountain Hawks.
Cornell had the advantage in the ground balls on Saturday, coming up with 34 to Lehigh's 22 ground balls. The Big Red also had a 43-22 advantage in shots on Saturday.Â
Lehigh will look to bounce back when the Mountain Hawks take on Navy in Annapolis, Md. on March 4 at 12 p.m. in the Patriot League opener for both teams.
