Lehigh Heads to Pitt in First-Ever Meeting

12/9/2023 2:54:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After making history in the 106-60 win over La Salle Thursday night, Lehigh women's basketball will look to make even more history when the Mountain Hawks face Pitt on Sunday at 2 p.m. Saturday's game will air live on ACC Network Extra.

This will be the first-ever meeting between Lehigh and Pitt. Lehigh is 8-1 and off to its best start of a season since 2014-15. The Panthers are 4-5.

Lehigh's 106 points against La Salle marked a single-game record. The previous record was 103 points, which happened in 1977 against Albright. Lehigh also tied its own Patriot League record of 17 made three-pointers.

Ella Stemmer and Lily Fandre both notched career-high numbers to help lead the way against La Salle. Stemmer had 33 points and connected on six three-pointers, which tied her career-high. Stemmer also corralled six rebounds and added three assists.

Fandre had her best shooting performance of her career, going 8-of-12 from the field and knocking down a career-high of five three-pointers. Fandre also tallied eight rebounds.

Stemmer and Fandre are Lehigh's two leading scorers. Stemmer is putting up 17.6 points per game, and Fandre is averaging 12.1 points per game.

Junior guard Colleen McQuillen dished out a career-high of nine assists against the Explorers. Lehigh had 24 assists on 30 made field goals against La Salle.

The Mountain Hawks are currently in the top 50 in NCAA Division I women's basketball in nine categories. Lehigh is eighth in three point attempts per game (28.8), 10th in free throw percentage (80.0%), 10th in defensive rebounds per game (33.1), 13th in three pointers per game (9.4), 14th in blocks per game (5.7), 23rd in free throws made per game (16.0), 25th in winning percentage (88.9), 40th in assists per game (17.1) and 43rd in field goal percentage (31.9%).

The Panthers are on a two-game winning streak after suffering a loss to Akron. The only common opponent between Lehigh and Pitt this season was Yale. Pitt defeated Yale 79-74 on Nov. 7, and Lehigh defeated Yale 90-75 on Nov. 17.

Pitt is led by Liatu King, who is averaging 21.3 points per game. King was named the ACC Player of the Week after averaging 25 points per game and eight rebounds last week.

Aislin Malcolm is the only other Panther averaging double figures (12.3).

If Lehigh beats Pitt, it would not mark the first power five win in program history, but it would mark the first victory against an ACC team. Lehigh defeated Syracuse in 2006, but that was before the Orange were in the ACC. Syracuse joined the ACC in 2011.

The last time Lehigh beat a power six team was on Nov. 22, 2019 against Seton Hall. The Mountain Hawks beat the Pirates 75-68.

The Mountain Hawks will have a 20 day break from competition before taking on Rider at home on Dec. 30.
