Stemmer and Lehigh Set Three Records in Loss To Pitt

12/10/2023 6:05:00 PM | Women's Basketball

PITTSBURGH - Looking to capture its first-ever victory against an ACC opponent, the Lehigh women's basketball team fell just short in a 94-82 loss to Pitt Sunday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center.

"One, I want to give Pitt credit," said head coach Addie Micir. "Especially the last 10 minutes - that was the best basketball we've seen them play. They executed at such a high level, and we're competing, and we were trying and fighting. I said to our team, we're going to get people's best, and that's the best part of it. What I love about this team is no matter if we were up in the game or down, we were smiling, having fun and playing Lehigh basketball."

The Mountain Hawks dropped to 8-2, while the Panthers improved to 5-5. Despite falling short in trying to capture their first ACC victory, Lehigh set a Patriot League record with 19 made three-pointers. This came one game after the Mountain Hawks tied their own league record with 17 made threes against La Salle.

Junior guard Ella Stemmer had a stellar performance for Lehigh, setting one record and tying another. Stemmer tied a Lehigh single-game record with 37 points on Sunday, which was set by Liz Feeley in 1986. Stemmer was 12-of-20 from the field and 10-of-17 from beyond the arc.  Stemmer's 10 three-pointers is a new single-game three-point record. The previous record of nine was set by Alex Ross in 2008.

Stemmer was already coming off of a career-high performance against La Salle, where she scored 33 points.

The Ann Arbor, Mich. native also tallied four assists, three steals, a block and a rebound against PItt.

"Ella's a hooper, and she's hunting now," Micir said. "She's doing it within the framework of the team, and we care about getting the open shot. I don't know how she keeps getting open, but the best part is her feet are set and she's ready and confident to knock it down. The best part about Ella is that we gave her a shoutout in the locker room, and she deflected to her teammates, and her teammates called her out on it."

In addition to Stemmer finishing in double figures, Lily Fandre had 15 points and Remi Sisselman tallied 13 points.

Fandre and Meghan O'Brien both corralled a team-high of seven rebounds. O'Brien also scored seven points.

The game was back and forth as there were 10 lead changes and 10 ties. The fourth quarter was the difference as Pitt outscored Lehigh 30-12.

The Panthers held Lehigh to just four made field goals in the final frame.

After being down 50-46 at halftime, Lehigh came out and owned the third quarter.

The Mountain Hawks led by as many as 10 points in the third quarter after Lily Fandre nailed a three-pointer with 2:39 remaining. Pitt ended the half on a 4-0 run to cut Lehigh's lead to 70-64 heading into the final frame. Part of Lehigh's lead in the third quarter was thanks to a quarter-high of seven made three-pointers.

Liatu King scored a layup with 5:20 remaining in the game to give Pitt its first lead since early in the third frame, and the Panthers would not lose their lead from there despite a valiant effort from Lehigh.

One of the main differences on Sunday was the rebounding and turnovers. Pitt outrebounded Lehigh 41-32, and 16 of those 41 rebounds were offensive.

The Mountain Hawks also had 21 turnovers, while the Panthers had 11.

Bella Perkinds led the way for Pitt with 22 points.

Lehigh was 29-of-61 from the field (47.5%) and 19-of-41 from beyond the arc (46.3%).  Pitt was 36-of-74 from the field ( 48.6%) and 7-of-14 from distance (50%).

The Panthers completely dominated the paint as they scored 50 of their 94 points in the paint.

Lehigh will go on a break for finals before taking on Rider at home on Dec. 30.
