BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Down by two with 3.7 seconds left in regulation, Lehigh looked to Lily Fandre, who made a driving layup at the buzzer to force overtime, but the Mountain Hawks ran out of gas in the final five minutes and were outscored 15-5, resulting in a 67-57 loss to Rider Saturday afternoon at Stabler Arena.
"Credit to Rider," said head coach Addie Micir. "They did what they do, and they did it better than what we did today. Taylor Langan just made sure that she got to the spots she wanted. She got the shots she wanted, and she knocked them down, and we had no answer for it. That's something we're going to have to take a look at, but I want to give credit to them. They slowed the game down. They got the shots they wanted, and they defended us really, really hard."
Lehigh ends the non-league slate with a 8-3 record. The Broncs improved to 3-8 this season with the win and moved to 2-0 against Patriot League teams after also defeating Boston University on Nov.18.
This was Lehigh's first game in 20 days due to finals and the holiday break.
"We're a rhythm team and we had some things the past couple of days that threw us off our rhythm, and that's all right, but we have to find a way to battle through adversity," Micir said. "One thing is we can't shoot that poorly, and we know it, but we're not going to make any excuses for it. We just have to play better."
Maddie Albrecht, who made her first career start on Saturday, opened up the scoring for the Mountain Hawks with a three-pointer, but that would be one of just five three-pointers all afternoon for Lehigh. This came one game after Lehigh set the single-game record for three-pointers (19) against Pitt.
Lehigh struggled offensively on Saturday, going 21-of-62 (33.9%) from the field and 6-of-37 (16.7%) from beyond the arc.
Fandre led the way with 15 points, and Albrecht recorded a career-high of 11 points after making her first collegiate start.
Taylor Langan was the difference on Saturday, as she led the way with 31 points. Langan was the only player to finish in double figures for the Broncs. Langan also recorded a game-high of 16 rebounds.
Despite Lehigh opening up the scoring, Rider controlled the pace for majority of the game and held the lead for 33 minutes.
At halftime, the Broncs led 31-24.
Langan started the second half with a layup to put Rider up by nine, which would be the largest lead of the game at the time.
Despite the nine-point advantage for the Broncs, Lehigh was able to claw back and end the third quarter on a 7-0 run to tie things at 49 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Mountain Hawks started the fourth quarter on a 6-2 run to take a 45-41 lead with 7:16 remaining in regulation. Lehigh's four-point lead would be the largest lead of the game for the Mountain Hawks.
Rider's defense stood strong and limited Lehigh to just seven points in the final seven minutes to help force overtime.
Both teams finished with 42 rebounds. Lehigh had 21 turnovers, while Rider had 15 turnovers
The Mountain Hawks will open up Patriot League play on Wednesday at Stabler against American. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
"We know who we are, and that's the most important part," Micir said.
