Lehigh Battles Army to Draw At Home

10/7/2023 9:39:00 PM | Men's Soccer

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh men's soccer picked up a point after drawing even in a 1-1 tie with Army West Point Saturday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

"I thought we played a good 15-20 minutes in the first half and scored a goal," said head coach Dean Koski. "I thought we kind of just stopped playing. We were more worried about losing than trying to win the game. Army did a really good job at putting pressure on us, and putting us back on our heels, and we did a really poor job at settling in and trying to play soccer like we did the first 20 minutes with confidence, and then you spend the next 75 minutes in a track meet, and it doesn't suit us."

The Mountain Hawks moved to 2-6-4, while the Black Knights 3-6-1. Both teams are 1-3-1 in league action.

Lehigh scored early on after the Mountain Hawks were awarded a penalty kick. Perry Kingson scored his fourth penalty kick goal of the year in the 16th minute to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead.

"Perry is important to the team," Koski said. "When Perry stays focused on the soccer player he is, he's a really good soccer player - he's really one of the better center midfielders in the league, and Perry gets away from himself and gets frustrated about calls, and frustrated about what's going on, he loses his soccer, and those are things we need to help him continue to manage because he can really make a difference for himself."

It was a pretty back and forth first half besides the lead for the Mountain Hawks.. At the half, both teams had five shots.

While Lehigh's defense stood strong for the majority of the game, the Black Knights found the equalizer in the 78th minute. Army was granted a penalty kick, and Gage Lyons was there to knock it in for the Black Knights.

Lehigh came out storming after the goal, trying to find the game-winning goal. Yusef Gueye was just inches away from securing it, but his shot sailed a little too high.

Army was also inches away from going home with a win. Trey Sheeler made a team save on the back line in the 89th minute to keep Lehigh equal with Army. Sheeler's team save was one of two team saves for Lehigh on Saturday.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tommy Chyzowych started for Lehigh, making five saves. Army's Harrison Faulkner tallied four saves.

The Black Knights outshot Lehigh 18-12. Jack Meyer and Gage Lyons both had four shots for Army. Four of Lehigh's 12 shots came in the last 10 minutes.

Tommy Zipprich and Kingson led the way for the Mountain Hawks with three saves.

First-year Jax Adkins recorded his first career start.

"I'm really pleased with a lot of first-years who have stepped up and played in tough moments," Koski said. "First minutes for a lot of first-years, and I thought Jax did fine. He had support from his teammates. Jax is a first-year though, and we can't expect our first-years to be difference makers. They need to be contributors. When you ask them to do more than what they're ready to do, it just gets challenging, but Jax did great, and I'm happy for him."

Lehigh will head to Philadelphia to take on Drexel on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
