ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Lehigh rowing hosted its annual Class Day Races on Saturday at the Steiner/Steinberg Boathouse in Allentown. The Mountain Hawks welcomed back numerous alumni and parents for a full day of rowing and celebration.
"Class Day 2023 was a special event for the Lehigh Rowing Community," said Steven J. '69 and Karen A. Lee head rowing coach Peter Costas. "Throughout the past year as I've familiarized myself with the people around this program, it's been exciting to see the passion and dedication from parents and alumni. Class Day is a great way to expose our current athletes to that tradition of commitment, and take time to reflect before building the plan forward as a group."
The team was blessed with great weather for the event, with high temperatures reaching the upper 70s on the day. Multiple alumni took to the water to race, including former coaches Chris Martensson '20 and Ellie Faulk '21, Alex Ioffe '89 and program co-founder Tom Flynn '90. Many parents of rowers, both current and past, attended Class Day on Saturday, including Flynn's mother.
"It was touching to hear from Tom's mother, who christened a boat named in her honor, as she reflected on the growth of her son's dream to have a rowing team at Lehigh 35 years ago," said Costas.
Lehigh will now set its sights on the Princeton Chase, which is set to be the team's first official competition of the season. The team will head to Princeton this upcoming Sunday, November 5.
