
Gatelein Scores Overtime Game-Winner on Senior Day

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team defeated Rider 2-1 in overtime on Sunday afternoon in Bethlehem.
"It was nice to play today and recognize our six influential seniors," said head coach Kelsi Lykens."Â I'm happy we could pull out the OT win for them."

Abbie Brown, Lotte Smorenburg, Bailee Sunderland, Julia Gatelein, Emily Mars and Erica Steele were honored prior to the game for their commitment and dedication to the program.

The first quarter was a midfield battle with Rider leading 3-1 in shots.

With under eight minutes remaining in the half, first-year Ella Stephenson took a quick restart outside of the circle, dishing the ball to sophomore Kiki Mes who shot a back-hand to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead.

The Mountain Hawks lead carried through into the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Rider pulled its goalkeeper to add an additional field player and Valeria Perales scored the equalizer with 1:23 on the clock.

The 1-1 tie sent the teams into overtime. Lehigh dominated offensively, recording four shots in the period before Gatelein scored the game-winner with 6:21 on the clock.

Junior goalkeeper Jenny Canoni recorded six saves while her Rider counterpart Carlee Fulton made eight.

Lehigh (9-5) hits the road next weekend traveling to Bucknell on Friday followed by a matchup at UAlbany on Sunday.
