BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team dropped a 3-2 game in overtime to Patriot League foe American on Friday night at Ulrich Field.
""Tonight was a heartbreaking loss, but this is exactly why we play the game," said head coach Kelsi Lykens. "American is a talented team, but we followed our scout plan and gave 100 percent effort for the entire game so we can walk off the field with our heads held high. Tomorrow is a new day and we will continue to work on our areas of improvement."
Â
The Mountain Hawks opened scoring at the end of the first quarter, with sophomore Lela Boermeester connecting with a pass from senior Julia Gatelein on the far post, giving Lehigh a 1-0 lead.
Â
Lehigh held its lead until the fourth quarter, when American's Sophie Willemse scored the equalizer off a straight shot on a corner.Â
Â
With under seven minutes remaining in the game, sophomore Kiki Mes had a fast break to the cage, connecting with senior Abbie Brown who scored the go-ahead goal past the diving American goalkeeper.
Â
Less than two minutes later, American was awarded a penalty stroke opportunity. Graduate student Charllene Boshoff capitalized to even the score at 2-2 with under five minutes remaining in the game.Â
Â
The game-winner came in the final few minutes of the first overtime period. American earned a penalty corner and first-year Emilia Winkler put it in the cage from her backhand, giving American (7-6, 4-0 PL) the 3-2 victory.
Â
Junior goalkeeper Jenny Canoni made eight saves in the match, with freshman goalkeeper Kate Burgess substituting in for the penalty stroke.
Â
Lehigh (8-5, 2-2 PL) returns to Ulrich Field on Sunday for a Senior Day matchup with Rider set for noon.
