
Lehigh Falls to No. 20 Cornell 4-2 on Sunday

ITHACA, N.Y. - No. 20 Cornell edged the Mountain Hawks 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Dodson Field.Â

"We made Cornell, the No. 20 team in the nation, earn their victory today," said head coach Kelsi Lykens. "Our effort amongst our fatigue from yesterday was impressive, and we are walking away happy with our performance."

Senior Bailee Sunderland and junior Guusje Hogendoorn scored for Lehigh, while senior Lotte Smorenburg and sophomore Kiki Mes dished out assists.

Lehigh got on the board first with 2:26 remaining in the first quarter. Sunderland rebounded the ball off the Cornell goalkeeper Martha Broderick's pads to give the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead heading into the second quarter.Â

Shortly after the start of the second, Cornell's Olivia Friedburg evened the score 1-1 off an assist from Ashley Plzak. The Big Red held an 11-4 shot advantage in the first half but the game remained tied.

At 12:32 in the third, Cornell's Caroline Ramsey scored on a penalty corner to give the Big Red a 2-1 lead. The Big Red struck again with 5:22 left in the third, as Hanke Govaert extended the lead to 3-1.

Hogendoorn responded with a goal off a penalty corner late in the third, bringing the Mountain Hawks within one down 3-2.

In the final six minutes, Sarah Rogalski provided an insurance goal as Cornell held on to win 4-2.

Junior goalkeeper Jenny Canoni played all 90 minutes in cage, recording four saves.

Lehigh (8-3) has one game next weekend, heading to Holy Cross on Saturday for an 11 a.m. matchup.
