Lehigh Captures Silver in Varsity Eight at MARC Championships, Narrowly Missing Gold
5/1/2022 10:20:00 PM | Men's Rowing
OCCOQUAN, Va. – In the program's first-ever season in the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference, the Lehigh men's rowing team almost captured Gold in the premiere event, the Varsity Eight, but fell just three tenths of a second short. Still, the Mountain Hawks took home Silver in a highly-successful day on Sunday at the Occoquan Reservoir in Virginia.
Â
"The men definitely raced to their abilities and I think shocked a lot of members of the MARC with the result," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "But at the same time, we weren't surprised with their ability and how they raced. We're really proud of them."
Â
The Mountain Hawks came out strong in their morning heat, winning it with a time of 6:07.3.
Â
"In the heat, we decided we would race it really hard to the 1,000 (meter point) and gauge our speed off where everyone else was and conserve energy for the final," said Conley. "I think the guys executed the race plans perfectly. We just came up short to a better crew today."
Â
Lehigh ended up finishing the grand final in 5:59.1, less than a second behind first-place Bucknell (5:58.8). For the complete results and award winners, please see below. The Mountain Hawks finished second overall in the final team standings as well.
Â
"The development of this group has been impressive," said Conley. "We have guys in that boat who just started rowing in September to now, they're a silver medalist at the conference championships. It has a lot to say about who they are, their values and where rowing fits into their lives. They've established a culture within the team that breeds success and I'm excited about where they'll keep taking this team."
