Strong Pitching, Game One Offensive Outburst Power Lehigh to Saturday Sweep at Bucknell

4/23/2022 7:30:00 PM | Baseball

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Riding hot bats in game one and strong pitching in both games, the Lehigh baseball team swept a Patriot League doubleheader from Bucknell Saturday at Depew Field. The Mountain Hawks scored 11 runs over the final four innings to take game one 14-4, before edging out a 3-2 victory in game two behind senior Chase Carlson's ninth-inning single.

The victories give Lehigh its first doubleheader sweep during Patriot League play and clinch its first series win as the Mountain Hawks get back to within a game of .500 in the league at 8-9. Lehigh is now 20-18 overall.

Senior Casey Rother led the way in the batter's box for the Mountain Hawks with four hits, four runs scored and three RBIs, including a home run in each game of the doubleheader. He also earned the victory on the mound in game two. Sophomores Tyler Young and Andrew Nole, and Carlson each tallied three hits, with Carlson totaling four RBIs on the day.

The Mountain Hawks struck immediately with three runs in the top of the first inning of game. A sacrifice fly by junior Adam Retzbach brought in first-year Jake Whitlinger for the first run of the game. Rother scored off an RBI by senior Gerard Sweeney who was later driven home courtesy of an RBI double by sophomore Riley Davis.

The Bison responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first to take a 4-3 lead but those proved to be their last of game one.

A solo home run in the top of the fourth inning by Sweeney tied the score at 4-4.

The Mountain Hawks retook the lead behind a two-run home run from Rother in the fifth.

Lehigh then broke the game open with six runs in the sixth. An RBI double by Carlson brought home Young. A Whitlinger RBI double brought in Carlson and Nole. Whitlinger didn't stay on base long as an RBI single from senior Joe Gorla brought him home. Retzbach finished out the six-run inning with an RBI single bringing in Gorla and Rother to extend Lehigh's lead to 12-4.

A groundout by Carlson in the top of the seventh brought in Young and Nole later scored on a wild pitch to end the game at 14-4.

Senior Luke Rettig (7-2) earned the win in game one after allowing three earned runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings. He had just two walks and struck out three batters. Senior Nick Pave added 1.1 innings of relief to close out the Bison in game one.

Bucknell's Will Greer took the loss, allowing 11 runs on 12 hits in 5.1 innings of work.

Rother carried his momentum into game two with a solo home run in the top of the first, his fifth of the season. The Bison tied the score in the bottom of the third with an RBI double down the right-field line.

A groundout RBI by Carlson brought home Nole to give Lehigh a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth. An RBI single by Bucknell tied the game again in the bottom of the seventh.

Carlson produced the game-winning run after hitting an RBI single to bring in Young in the top of the ninth.

Senior Matt Stamford pitched a solid seven innings while allowing two runs off of four hits and four strikeouts. Rother (2-0) was credited with the win after pitching two scoreless innings and striking out two batters.

Bucknell (16-21, 12-9 PL) was led offensively by Kyle Lyons, who had two hits in each game.

Lehigh will go for the series sweep tomorrow with game time set for 1 p.m. from Depew Field. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
