Navy claims weekend, season series over Lehigh after both games Sunday

4/17/2022 10:06:00 PM | Baseball

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Lehigh baseball team had a chance to claim the season series over Navy Sunday afternoon, playing the conclusion of Saturday's nightcap and Game 3, but dropped both contests at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. Action picked up in the sixth inning of Game 2 with the Midshipmen (17-19, 8-10 PL) scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth to get an 11-4 win, while the Mountain Hawks (17-18, 5-9 PL) were out-lasted in 10 innings in Game 3, 3-2.

Senior Casey Rother (3-for-7) and Joe Gorla (4-for-10) both had fantastic offensive performances between the two games for Lehigh, while first-year Jake Whitlinger and sophomore Tyler Young also had a three-hit pair of games.

A three-run homer via Retzbach in the top of the first inning of Game 2 on Saturday had Lehigh out in front, 3-0 before five straight runs had the Mids up 5-3 heading into the final portion of the contest after the suspension.

Navy scored six runs in the sixth inning to pull ahead 11-3 before the Mountain Hawks tacked on another run in the eighth off Joe Gorla's RBI single through the left side of the field.

Matt Stamford (3-4), who pitched the first 3.2 innings of the game, was charged with the loss. He allowed five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

Ben Christian got the start for the Mountain Hawks in Game 3 and pitched brilliantly, allowing just two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in six strong innings of work. Jack Hamilton (2-1) picked up his first loss of the year after allowing the go-ahead run in three innings of work. He was pulled in the bottom of the 10th inning in favor of Rother, who inherited the runner on second base.

Rother had a hand in both of Lehigh's runs in the contest, a sacrifice-fly to right field in the first inning which put Lehigh ahead, 1-0 and a single through the left side in the third inning, pushing the lead to 2-0.

Navy scored in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game at 2-2 before walking off in the bottom of the 10th inning on Alex Smith's RBI single through the left side with the bases loaded as the Mids prevailed, 3-2.

Young led the way for Lehigh with a 3-for-4 game while Whitlinger went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.

Lehigh will look to snap a two-game losing streak on Wednesday at 3 p.m. against Lafayette at J. David Walker Field in The Rivalry presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute.
