Mule’ Leads No. 20 Mountain Hawks Past Binghamton, 12-10
3/29/2022 9:42:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior Christian Mule' posted a natural hat trick in the second quarter to turn a 5-5 tie into an 8-5 advantage, as the No. 20 Lehigh men's lacrosse team picked up a 12-10 road win at Binghamton on Tuesday. Mule' finished with a season-high six goals (on six shots) and seven points. Senior Tommy Schelling also posted a goal and four assists, as Lehigh improved to 5-3 on the season.
"I thought today was a great game," said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. "Give a lot of credit to Binghamton. They really challenged us in a lot of ways. Very proud of our guys' effort in the end of hanging on and staving off their comeback. They were rallying late in the game and our guys made a few plays defensively, offensively, in between the lines and we were able to secure the win."
Sophomore Quinn Armstrong scored Lehigh's first two goals of the day, while senior Cole Kirst had a goal and two assists and sophomore Scott Cole recorded a goal and assist
A tight first quarter saw the score tied at one, two and four. After Lehigh's Andrew Mapstone and Binghamton's Trey Sofield traded goals early in the second quarter, Mule' took over late in the stanza with goals at 6:37, 2:01 and 1:22 for an 8-5 halftime lead.
The Bearcats scored the first two of the third quarter, but Mule' responded with two more (giving him five straight Lehigh goals), including a behind-the-back beauty, to open an 11-7 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Final shots were 39-32 in favor of Lehigh while groundballs were even at 29 apiece. Graduate student James Spence made eight saves while Binghamton's Teddy Dolan finished with 13.
"We had to earn every inch," said Cassese. "I thought Binghamton was excellent up the middle. I thought they did a really good job facing off. They did a really good job in the goal. Their offense was strong. They challenged us a lot. I give them a lot of credit today."
The Mountain Hawks will be back on the road this weekend to face rival Lafayette on Saturday, with game time set for noon from Fisher Stadium in Easton, Pa.

"I thought Christian Mule' shot the ball really well today," said Cassese. "We did a good job finding him. That was important for our offense to create a lead and eventually separate."Did we say see this Mule' goal twice? How about three times?! Binghamton chipped away with the next three, but a beautiful feed from Kirst set up Schelling in front for a 12-10 lead with 1:24 on the clock, which proved to be the final..@ESPNAssignDesk want to see another angle of Mule's no-look BTB? #SCTop10 pic.twitter.com/3vrNMJ0Sl2

"We had to earn every inch," said Cassese. "The most valuable player for us today was actually John Sidorski who's out injured, but he's been diving in as a player-coach studying the other teams' rides and clears. I thought he put in a great game plan this week and that was by far the best game of our season between the lines and in particular, clearing the ball and riding the ball."HUGE insurance goal by Tommy Schelling from Cole Kirst.
