No. 20 Lehigh Doubles Up Lafayette, 14-7

4/2/2022 8:06:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Leading 8-7 heading to the fourth quarter, the No. 20 Lehigh men's lacrosse team outscored the Leopards 6-0 in the fourth to pull away for a 14-7 win on Saturday afternoon at Fisher Stadium. The win was the Mountain Hawks' 13th straight against the Leopards and 21st in their last 22 tries. Senior Tommy Schelling led Lehigh's offense with five points via two goals and three assists.

"I thought Lafayette did a really great job," said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. "I thought for three quarters, they controlled the pace of the game. They played harder, they wanted it more, and that turned in the fourth quarter and our guys really dug in. They were not very focused, not very dialed in the first three quarters with the exception of the defensive end; Mikey Sisselberger at the faceoff and James Spence in the goal were extremely dialed, extremely focused. That was a big part of the reason why we had the lead going into the fourth."

Senior Matt Marker, junior Christian Mule' and sophomore Scott Cole all scored twice while senior Cole Kirst had a goal and assist. Defensively, graduate student Teddy Leggett continued his stellar play of late, posting seven groundballs and two caused turnovers. In the process, he moved from fifth to fourth in program history for career groundballs with 243.

Lafayette's Peter Lehman scored first, but the Mountain Hawks answered with four straight – scored by Cole, sophomore Quinn Armstrong, Marker and Kirst – to put Lehigh ahead 4-2 early in the second quarter.

The Mountain Hawks later extended their run to 6-1 and 7-3, as a Cole goal at 2:41 of the second quarter put Lehigh ahead, 7-3. However, Lafayette scored twice in the final 1:43 of the half to pull within 7-5 at the break.

Schelling opened the second-half scoring, but the Leopards answered with two unanswered to end the quarter, pulling within 8-7 after 45 minutes of play. Lehigh erased any doubt in the fourth, as Schelling scored again at 12:02. Sophomore Aidan Decker gave Lehigh a 10-7 lead at 6:18, followed by a Mule' tally 26 seconds later. With 4:37 remaining, senior Judah Hicks scored his first-career goal, a highlight-reel rocket from the defensive half of the field. Goals from first year Dakota Eierman and Mule' at 2:31 and 1:37, respectively, rounded out the scoring, giving the Mountain Hawks the 14-7 win.

"Our offense works best when all six guys are sharing the ball," said Cassese. "We work for the best possible shot, then we shoot with a focused effort and with urgency. I felt like we did that at times early in the game and the times that we didn't, it came back to bite us. But their goalie played really well today and I give him a lot of credit. He made a lot of saves, and I just felt like we were able to keep grinding and then eventually in the fourth quarter, we were finishing our shots with purpose and that was the difference in the game."

Final shots were 46-36 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 28-24 edge in groundballs. Senior James Spence finished with 13 saves, including 12 over the first three quarters across Lafayette's Gabe Cummins, who finished with 12. Senior Mike Sisselberger finished 15-of-24 facing off with 11 groundballs.

The Mountain Hawks will return home on Sunday, Apr. 10 to host Bucknell at 1 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
