No. 19 Lehigh Narrowly Falls to No. 5 Georgetown, 14-11

3/26/2022 8:00:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The No. 19 Lehigh men's lacrosse team overcame a five-goal halftime deficit to pull within one in the third quarter, but ultimately lost, 14-11 to Georgetown on Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Hoyas opened that lead with six goals in the second quarter, but the Mountain Hawks responded with four answered goals in the third quarter, to set up a back-and-forth fourth. Junior Christian Mule' scored a team-high four goals to lead Lehigh's offense while senior Matt Marker added a career-high three goals.

"I thought today was a great battle," said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. "I give our guys a lot of credit for when we fell behind a couple times, just scrapping back. We came out in the third quarter, played really hard, were able to bring it within one, but weren't quite able to tie it up. Georgetown was able to extend the lead again. I give our guys credit again; they kept battling back.

"Georgetown made the plays they had to make today in order to secure the game and get the win." Along with Mule' and Marker, four other Mountain Hawks scored one goal apiece. Being defended by first team All-American Will Bowen, senior Cole Kirst tied a career high with five points via a goal and career-high four assists. Senior Tommy Schelling had a goal and three assists.

Defensively, graduate student Teddy Leggett led the Mountain Hawks with six groundballs and four caused turnovers. First year Raul Ochotorena made a strong impact, recording two caused turnovers – both in the first quarter.

Facing a strong Georgetown opponent in James Reilly, who had won 66.4 percent of his faceoffs entering the day, senior Mike Sisselberger won 17-of-29 on Saturday with a team-high 11 groundballs. Included was five wins in a row to finish the game. Sisselberger is now up to 246 career groundballs, moving him into third place in program history.

The Hoyas scored the first goal of the game, but the Mountain Hawks responded with a goal at 12:36 by Mule'. Georgetown and Lehigh traded goals again, courtesy of another goal from Mule'.

Marker scored his first to tie the score, 3-3, with 6:19 left in the first quarter. An assist from Kirst set up a Schelling goal to give Lehigh its first lead at 4-3 with 4:57 on the clock. Georgetown used a 4-0 run, bridging the first and second quarters, to go up 7-4 with 10:35 left in the first half. Mule' ended the scoring drought for the Mountain Hawks with a goal at 9:52 on the clock, but Georgetown used a 3-0 run to go up 10-5 at the end of the first half. After no scoring for the first five minutes of the second half, first year Dakota Eierman started the scoring with an unassisted goal with 9:01 on the clock. The Mountain Hawks later scored three goals in the last 1:53 of the third quarter – by sophomore Scott Cole, Marker and Mule' – to pull within one at 10-9, as Lehigh's defense held Georgetown scoreless for the enter stanza. The Hoyas responded at the start of the fourth quarter with two goals to take a 12-9 lead with 13:55 remaining. An assist from Cole set up Marker's third goal of game at 11:35 , completing the hat trick. Kirst added another goal for the Mountain Hawks just over a minute later to pull within one at 12-11. On the ensuing possession, Lehigh had multiple chances to tie, but Hoyas' goalkeeper Michael Scharfenberger made two big saves to keep his team in front. A Georgetown goal with 3:17 left in the game put the Hoyas up 13-11, and the Hoyas added insurance with 1:34 on the clock to secure the win.

For the game, Georgetown held a 36-27 edge in shots while Lehigh held a 39-38 advantage in groundballs. Graduate student James Spence finished with 11 saves in goal. Scharfenberger had nine saves for the Hoyas.

"I just don't think we were clean enough to win in this type of a game against a top five team," said Cassese. "We need to match playing hard with playing clean. We ended up with 23 turnovers (Georgetown had 15). It's going to be tough to beat anybody, let alone a top five team, when you have 23 turnovers. A silver lining in all this is I thought our guys battled until the end. That's something we can certainly hang our hat on."

Lehigh will next travel to Vestal, N.Y., to face Binghamton on Tuesday at 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
