Mountain Hawks drop mid-week tilt at Penn Wednesday

3/23/2022 6:36:00 PM | Baseball

PHILADELPHIA – The Lehigh baseball team scored first in the top of the first on a Gerard Sweeney solo home run, eventually rallying back to tie the game in the middle innings, but Penn claimed a 16-6 victory Wednesday afternoon at Meiklejohn Stadium, snapping the Mountain Hawks' (12-7) win streak at six in a row. The Quakers (12-5) have now won seven straight games.

Sweeney, the reigning Patriot League Player of the Week, launched his fourth home run of the season over the right field fence to put the Mountain Hawks on top early, 1-0.

Against Lehigh starter Ryan Deom, Wyatt Henseler answered back with a two-run homer to right center, while two more runs came across to score in the inning to give the Quakers a 4-1 edge.

Lehigh added two runs in the top of the third by way of Casey Rother's RBI single and a bases loaded walk to Rafe Perich, coming within a run of Penn at 4-3.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Penn scored twice on a single and a sacrifice-fly to extend the lead to 6-3.

The Mountain Hawks got back to work in the top of the fifth inning after Rother singled through the left side with one out and Adam Retzbach walked. Both runners got into scoring position after Perich grounded out to second base and Justin Butler got hit by a 1-0 pitch to load the bases with one out. Riley Davis cleared the bases on a 1-1 count, a three-run double to right center field, tying the game up at 6-6.

Penn scored six runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and three in the eighth to come away with a 16-6 win in Philly.

Marcus Danchision (0-1) was charged with the loss after giving up the lead and six earned runs on three hits in 0.1 innings of work.

Offensively, the Mountain Hawks totaled five hits, two of which were off the bat of Rother (2-for-4), who also tallied an RBI. Sweeney, Davis, and Tyler Young also registered knocks in the lineup.

Lehigh will travel to nearby Lafayette on Saturday for the first of two doubleheaders this weekend to open up Patriot League play. All four games – both starting at noon Saturday and Sunday – will be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required).
