Mountain Hawks close regular season Wednesday at Navy

3/1/2022 5:24:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Just one game separates the Lehigh women's basketball team from the Patriot League Tournament and they are looking for a statement in the final regular season game of the year after falling in three straight, including four of the last five. On Wednesday, the Mountain Hawks visit Navy at Alumni Hall with tip-off set for 7 p.m.

Coming off two consecutive road losses at American last Tuesday and Wednesday, the Mountain Hawks struggled against Lafayette Saturday night at Stabler Arena, falling 65-61 having never led in the contest.

Despite the loss, sophomore guard Mackenzie Kramer willed Lehigh back into the game late with her game-high 24 points on five 3-pointers. Kramer currently ranks second in the Patriot League in scoring (16.3) and first in both field goal percentage (46.0 percent) and first in 3-pointers made per game (3.3), a category she has led from the very first game of the year.

Senior forward Emma Grothaus recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds against the Leopards. She enters Wednesday's contest at Navy just eight points shy of 1,000 for her career, trying to become the 21st Mountain Hawk in program history to join the 1,000-point club and the seventh to join the 1,000-point, 600-rebound club.

Lehigh cannot climb higher than the No. 5 seed in the Patriot League Tournament following its loss to Lafayette Saturday and will face fourth-seeded Bucknell Monday night in Lewisburg for the Quarterfinal round to attempt to qualify for the Patriot League semifinals for the fourth straight season.

The last time the Mountain Hawks faced Navy, they dropped a Stabler Arena record 99 points against the Midshipmen, the second-highest scoring total in Lehigh program history.

After dropping five straight games, Navy got back on track with a 52-48 victory over Colgate Saturday in Annapolis. The Midshipmen (8-19, 5-12 PL) are locked into the No. 8 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and are set to host No. 10 Loyola (Md.) Saturday at Alumni Hall in a first-round matchup.

Navy was led by Kristina Donza with 19 points, three rebounds and two assists, while shooting 6-of-8 from the field. Jennifer Coleman added 12 points with eight boards, five assists and two steals.

As a team, the Midshipmen shot 33.3 percent (19-for-57) in the victory, including 43.8 percent (7-for-16) from beyond-the-arc and 43.8 percent (7-for-16) from the free throw line.

Navy allowed Colgate to shoot 35.2 percent (19-for-54) from the field and just 26.7 percent (4-for-15) from long distance. The Raiders shot 66.7 percent (6-for-9) from the charity stripe.

Coleman has a decent shot to be named Patriot League Player of the Year when it's all said and done or at least a First Team All-Patriot League selection after a dominant season for the Mids. At 22.0 points per game and 2.8 steals per game, Coleman is tops in the Patriot League in those categories.

She scored 26 of Navy's 65 points in a loss to Lehigh back in January, shooting 12-of-26 from the field with 11 rebounds and seven assists.

Sydne Watts is the Mids' second-leading scorer this year at 9.5 points per game, while Lindsay Llewellyn is third at 6.8 points per game.

Wednesday will mark the 67th all-time meeting between Lehigh and Navy.

After the Mountain Hawks' win earlier in the season, the all-time series is tied, 33-33 while Lehigh has the edge in Patriot League contests at 31-28.

Lehigh has won the previous five meetings including six of the last seven over Navy.

Wednesday's contest will be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required) as well as on Fox Sports Radio 94.7 FM and 1230 AM in Easton with Matt Markus on the play-by-play call.
