Mountain Hawks a victory from securing winning season vs. Colgate Wednesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On Wednesday, the Lehigh women's basketball team returns home for the first of three remaining home games on the docket, hosting Colgate at Stabler Arena with tip-off set for 6 p.m. Playing at home has been special this season for the Mountain Hawks (15-6, 7-3 PL), going 11-2 in such games so far including the last three dating back to Jan. 19 vs. Navy.
At Boston University Saturday proved to be a gritty victory for Lehigh, as the first-place Terriers missed a last-second shot attempt and the Mountain Hawks prevailed for the 68-65 win.
Lehigh played BU right down to the wire and at times, it looked like the Terriers would pull off the split. But senior guard Megan Walker was excellent once again, scoring a team-high 19 points on eight field goals and just one 3-pointer to lead the Mountain Hawks to victory.
Without senior point guard Clair Steele in the lineup, the Mountain Hawks struggled distributing the ball and knocking down 3-point jumpers, going just 5-for-22 as a team from long range, the least amount of 3-pointers made in a win this year. Lehigh 29 field goals, 24 of which were two's and only eight total assists, well below the team's usual average (16.1)
The Mountain Hawks have entered the homestretch of the season heading into the Patriot League Tournament with eight regular season games remaining, five of which are set to take place on the road. As it stands, Lehigh has played one less game than both first-place Holy Cross and BU and are a game behind each record-wise. Both the Crusaders and Terriers still play each other twice from here on out.
Notably, senior forward Emma Grothaus has begun the chase to 1,000 points after scoring four against BU to get to 900 for her career. She needs 100 to become just the 21st player in program history to reach the milestone.
This year has been a tough one for Colgate, completely starting over from the ground up after opting out of the remainder of last season due to mass amounts of injuries, the resignation of head coach Bill Cleary and the hiring of first-year head coach Ganiyat Adeduntan.
But for the first time all season, it seems like the Raiders turned a slight corner with Adeduntan's first signature win as Colgate head coach with a 74-60 victory over American on Saturday at Cotterell Court.
After the first four minutes of action, the Raiders never trailed for the remainder of the contest and pulled away for the dominant 14-point victory over the Eagles. Alexa Brodie led the way with 23 points, six rebounds and three assists, while first-years Taylor Golembiewski and Morgan McMahon added 15 and 13 points, respectively.
The Raiders led by as many as 16 points in the game and shot 52.7 percent (29-for-55) from the field and 85.7 percent (12-for-14) from the free throw line. Colgate's 3-point field goal defense was on point Saturday, holding AU shooters to just 7.1 percent (1-for-14) from beyond-the-arc.
Despite losing leading scorer Taylor Langan (10.3 ppg) since November, others have stepped up in the form of Golembiewski (9.6 ppg) and Brodie (9.5), while McMahon (8.8) and Sophia Diehl (8.4) are each nearing double-figures.
Colgate doesn't lead many categories on the Patriot League leaderboard this season, but it is ranked third in free throw percentage (75.4) and sixth in blocked shots (2.41).
A win on Wednesday night would mark just the Raiders' third in league play this season, winning previously against Lafayette and American.
Historically, Lehigh has had dominant success against Colgate in the all-time series, leading the way 45-28.
A win over the Raiders in the Patriot League-opener has the Mountain Hawks out to a three-game win streak over the Raiders dating back to the 2019-20 regular season finale in Hamilton. Lehigh has won six of the last seven matchups over Colgate dating back to Jan. 23, 2019.
In a PL-opening victory back on Jan. 2 in Hamilton, Grothaus led the way with 17 points and seven rebounds with five blocks and four steals, while Walker added 16 points on four triples and junior guard Anna Harvey scored a career-high 13 points with four boards and four assists as the Mountain Hawks shot 42.6 percent (26-for-61) from the field to earn the 20-point, 72-52 win over Colgate on the road. McMahon led the Raiders with 14 points and six rebounds, while Brodie had 11 points and three boards in 31 minutes.
Wednesday evening's game will be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required) with Corey Spector on the play-by-play call. Tickets can be purchased online at LehighTickets.com or by calling the ticket office at 610-7LU-GAME.
