No. 13 Lehigh Remains on the Road to Face Hobart Saturday

2/18/2022 10:30:00 AM | Men's Lacrosse

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The No. 13 Lehigh men's lacrosse team returns to the field on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Hobart to face the Statesmen. Opening faceoff is set for 12 p.m. Please note, the game will be played indoors at Stiles Field at the Poole Family Sports Dome. Due to the venue capacity limits, spectator attendance will be limited to those on the teams' pass lists.

Saturday features a rematch of an old, yet short, Patriot League matchup - as Hobart was once in the Patriot League. Lehigh and Hobart faced every season between 2000 and 2004. Ironically, the other four meetings in program history came in the early 1900s. Saturday's game can be viewed, for free, on Hobart's website.

The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 10-5 season-opening win at NJIT last Saturday. Junior Christian Mule' led the offense with four goals, including the 50th of his career. Senior Tommy Schelling also had four points via a goal and three assists, eclipsing 50-career assists in the process. Sophomore Quinn Armstrong tied a career-high three goals, recording his second-career hat trick (both against NJIT). Defensively, senior Michael Gomez led the way with four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Graduate student James Spence was stellar in goal, making 12 saves.

In the faceoff circle, senior Mike Sisselberger began where he left off last season. He actually lost the opening draw, but responded with 11 straight wins. He finished the afternoon 14-of-16 with 11 groundballs, earning Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week for his sixth straight week (after ending last regular season with five in a row). Due to the big edge in possession, the Mountain Hawks held a 56-29 advantage in shots. NJIT goalkeeper Liam Brown was strong in making 20 saves.

Overall, Lehigh improved to 12-1 over its last 13 season openers. The Mountain Hawks went up in two polls announced Monday (up to No. 9 in USA Lacrosse and No. 13 in Inside Lacrosse/Media), but down to No. 16 in the USILA poll.

A member of the Northeast Conference, Hobart finished last season 6-3 overall, 6-2 in the NEC regular season - falling to Bryant in the conference semifinals. The year prior, the Statesmen were 4-1 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. So far in 2022, Hobart is 1-0, owning a 22-13 win over Canisius. The Statesmen attack combined for 20 points, with Tommy Mott leading the way via a career-high nine points as he was named to the USILA Team of the Week. Hobart held a 60-43 edge in shots. Another attackman, Ryan Archer, was named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List. In total, Hobart's top five goal scorers from last season return, with 89 percent of its total goal scoring returning and 93 percent of its assists.

Hobart leads the all-time series with Lehigh, 6-3, which includes four games in the early 1900s (1900-1904) and five games in the early 2000s (2000-2004). Lehigh won three of the first four meetings in 1900 (11-0), 1901 (6-0) and 1904 (2-1). The Statesmen went a perfect 5-0 when the teams squared off beginning in 2000 as Patriot League members. Both Lehigh and Hobart are historic programs; in 1885, Lehigh initiated lacrosse competition as a charter member of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, joining Cornell, Harvard, Hobart, Johns Hopkins, Maryland, Penn State, Stevens Institute, Swarthmore, Syracuse and Yale.

Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks head home next Saturday (Feb. 26) to host No. 17 Cornell in their home opener. Gametime is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
