Lehigh To Close Out Dual Season Saturday At No. 13 Arizona State

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - On the final weekend of the dual season, Lehigh heads to Tempe, Ariz., to face No. 13 Arizona State Saturday in its final tune up before the EIWA Championships. The Mountain Hawks got back on the winning track in their last time out, defeating Bucknell 21-12 Saturday in their home finale. Lehigh reeled off five straight wins from 174 through 125, highlighted by a first period fall from Jordan Wood to snap a four-match losing streak.

Arizona State is looking to bounce back from a home loss to Missouri last weekend. The Sun Devils feature seven top 10-ranked wrestlers. Potential matchups between top 10 foes Saturday include Josh Humphreys vs. Jacori Teemer at 157 and Jordan Wood vs. Cohlton Schultz at 285.

Competing in his final home dual, sixth-year senior Jordan Wood capped his Grace Hall career with a 57 second fall against Bucknell. The heavyweight came out of a planned Olympic redshirt in January 2021 and went 9-3 last season. He won his fourth straight individual EIWA championship at 285, becoming Lehigh's fifth four-time EIWA champion (and first since 1983) and the first heavyweight to win four EIWA titles. Wood is a two-time All-American, finishing fourth in 2019 and earning second team honors in 2020. With a 18-1 start to his sixth year, Wood now owns an 91-21 career record. This year, Wood has a chance to become the first five-time EIWA champion in conference history.

The NCAA released the second coaches' ranking and first RPI for the 2021-22 season on Feb. 11. The rankings and RPI are two of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. To be eligible for the rankings, a wrestler needed to be designated as a starter and must have five Division I matches in the weight class including at least one within the last 30 days. To be eligible for a RPI ranking, a wrestler must have 15 matches against Division I opponents. Senior Jordan Wood continues to lead the way for the Mountain Hawks coming in at No. 7 at 285, followed by junior Josh Humphreys, who is No. 8 at 157. Wood and Humphreys also own the No. 1 RPI at their respective weight classes. The third coaches' ranking, second RPI release and conference tournament allocations are expected to be announced on Thursday, Feb. 24.

Six Lehigh wrestlers appear in the latest rankings by both InterMat and FloWrestling, while three wrestlers are ranked by both Amateur Wrestling News and The Open Mat. Senior Jordan Wood leads the way as he is ranked in the top seven by all four outlets. Junior Josh Humphreys and first year Malyke Hines are also ranked by all four outlets, with Humphreys rated in the top 10 by all four. Junior Jaret Lane and sophomore Brian Meyer are ranked by two outlets, while first years Connor McGonagle and Max Brignola both appear in one.

Arizona State has seven wrestlers in the second NCAA Coaches' ranking and all seven appear in the top 10. Heavyweight Cohlton Schultz is ranked second, while Jacori Teemer is ranked third at 157. Former U.S. National Team head coach Zeke Jones is in his eighth season as head coach at his alma mater.

Individually, Jordan Wood will be bidding for his record fifth heavyweight title, while Josh Humphreys is going for his third. Jaret Lane and Malyke Hines will look to repeat after winning last year. Automatic bids for the NCAA Championships, Mar. 17-19 in Detroit will also be at stake.
