WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Lehigh field hockey team travels to American for the 2022 Patriot League Tournament on Wednesday to prepare for its semifinal matchup with the host Eagles on Thursday afternoon. The match is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+. Lehigh enters the postseason with an 11-7 overall record, 4-2 in league play, to finish tied for second place in the standings (and receiving the No. 3 seed). The Mountain Hawks will be searching for their first Patriot League Tournament victory since 1996.

Lehigh is 2-6-1 all-time in the league tournament, with victories coming in 1994 and 1996. In 1994, the Mountain Hawks defeated Holy Cross (2-1) before playing to a scoreless draw against Lafayette and winning in penalty strokes for the program's first and only Patriot League Championship. Two years later, Lehigh topped Bucknell in the semifinals (3-1) before falling to Colgate in the title game.

The Mountain Hawks finished the regular season with an overall record of 11-7, tying the same number of wins they had a season ago. This is the first time since 1985-86 that the program has reached double-digit wins in back-to-back years and won at least 11 games in consecutive seasons since 1984-85.

On Saturday, Lehigh defeated Colgate, 5-0, to celebrate Senior Day with a shutout victory to close out Patriot League competition. First-year Maddie Kandra and sophomore Guusje Hogendoorn both scored a pair of goals while junior Lotte Smorenburg scored the first goal of the match. Senior goalkeeper Maddie Kahn posted three saves in her third shutout of the season and the ninth of her career.

The Mountain Hawks closed out the regular season on Sunday with a non-league overtime loss to Columbia. Senior Sarah Bonthuis scored the lone Lehigh goal of the match in the third period to tie the contest at 1-1. Lehigh earned a penalty corner just 43 seconds into the overtime period and fired a shot, but was blocked. Columbia earned a penalty corner of their own, which they were able to capitalize on and ended the game 2:43 into overtime. Kahn registered 10 saves, the fourth time this season.

Hogendoorn earned the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week for her performance in the final two games of the regular season, recording five points with two goals against Colgate and then assisted the lone Lehigh goal of their Sunday match.

Four Mountain Hawks landed on the All-Patriot League teams announced on Tuesday. Bonthuis and junior Julia Gatelein both were selected to first team all-league, while Kahn and first-year Kiki Mes were tabbed as second team all-league honorees.

Bonthuis leads Lehigh in points (30) with 10 goals and 10 assists, followed by junior Abbie Brown's seven goals and two assists for 16 points. Kandra is the other Mountain Hawk in double-figures in points (14) with six goals and two assists. Kahn enters the Patriot League Tournament with a 1.99 goals-against average and a .741 save percentage in 18 starts.

American (9-7, 4-2 Patriot League) ended its season on a three-game win streak with the Eagles' most recent victory came over William & Mary, 2-1, in non-league action. Sophomore Federica Turino Dellamaggiore leads the squad in points (25) with 11 goals and three assists while senior Charllene Boshoff has netted eight goals on the year with 16 points. Junior goalkeeper Bryn Underwood, who was named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, has a 1.33 goals-against average, 80 saves and a .810 save percentage in the 14 matches she started.

Earlier this season, on Oct. 14 in Washington, D.C., Lehigh got on the board first with a goal from sophomore Eleni Kountroubis that was assisted by Bonthuis late in the first period. American then scored three unanswered goals. Senior Megan Hoffman scored the equalizer in the second period, then Dellamaggiore found the back of the cage twice.

Lehigh is searching for its first victory in program history over this American squad on Thursday, as the Mountain Hawks are 0-26 versus the Eagles. In last year's Patriot League Tournament, Lehigh suffered a 1-0 loss to the Eagles, who went on to claim the 2021 Patriot League Tournament title with a 2-1 victory over Lafayette.
