Legendary Win Over American Propels Lehigh to Patriot League Championship Game

11/3/2022 6:53:00 PM | Field Hockey

WASHINGTON – After double-overtime (80 minutes) and eight rounds of a shootout, junior Julia Gatelein beat the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year to lift the Lehigh field hockey team into the championship match with a 2-1 victory and earn the Mountain Hawks first victory over American in program history, Thursday at the Jacobs Complex.

Lehigh (12-7, 4-2 Patriot League) advances to its first championship match since 1996 and won its third-ever match in the Patriot League Tournament. The Mountain Hawks will be looking to capture their second Patriot League title and first since 1994.

The Mountain Hawks and Eagles played a scoreless first period with American taking two shots as Lehigh mustered one shot. Both senior goalkeepers recorded one save apiece after the first 15 minutes of action.

American attempted the lone shot of the second period, but both squads were still scoreless and did not earn a single penalty corner through 30 minutes.

Just a little over two minutes into the third period, first-year Zoe Day sent a ball into the circle from the right side that had American's keeper step out and get a pad on it, but senior Sarah Bonthuis gathered the loose ball in front of the cage and scored the first goal of the contest. The Eagles attempted two shots on goal that senior goalkeeper Maddie Kahn kept out of the goal. Lehigh would posses a 1-0 lead heading into the fourth period.

American found the equalizer just over two minutes into the fourth quarter to tie the match at 1-1 with 12:53 remaining in regulation. The Eagles attempted two more shots in the period and held the Mountain Hawks without a shot, as Lehigh and American would head to overtime knotted up at 1-1.

The Mountain Hawks earned their first penalty corners of the match in the first overtime and would get six shots off, two on goal, while the Eagles registered three shots with two going on cage. Heading into the second overtime still tied 1-1, American got one penalty corner and one shot, but both squads were still even after 80 minutes of play and head into a one-vs-one shootout.

Lehigh would strike first on the second round of the shootout when sophomore Guusje Hogendoorn struck the back of the cage to take a 1-0 advantage. American tied up the shootout, 1-1, in the fourth round. After a series of saves from both squads, Kahn recorded multiple saves and brought Gatelein up once again to give the Mountain Hawks the victory and earn their spot in the Patriot League Championship game. Gatelein approached the cage, turned her back, made a move to get beyond the keeper and fire a shot in the back of the goal take down the Eagles, 2-1.

Bonthuis recorded her team-leading 11th goal of the season, tying her career-high from a season ago, while Gatelein gets credit for the game-winning goal in the shootout. Defensively, Kahn recorded eight saves on the nine shots she faced. She then made seven stops during her first-career shootout.

The Mountain Hawks tallied nine total shots, with four going on cage, and earned two penalty corners, both of them coming in the first overtime.

Lehigh will take on top-seeded Boston University (10-8, 5-1 Patriot League) in the Patriot League Championship match at 11 a.m. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
