BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Mountain Hawks will ring in 2022 with four consecutive home duals, beginning this weekend as Lehigh hosts Binghamton on Friday and then No. 8 Cornell on Saturday inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The Cornell match is Pinning Cancer Day, presented by Red Robin in partnership with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Lehigh enters the weekend at 4-4 after a 1-2 showing and a fourth place pool finish at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals, Dec. 20-21 in Niceville, Fla. Junior Josh Humphreys went 3-0 at 157 with three bonus wins over ranked opponents to lead the way for the Mountain Hawks. Both of Lehigh's opponents this weekend were also at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals. Binghamton finished sixth in the red pool and Cornell took third in the blue pool.

Tickets remain available for both duals, with a limited number of seats remaining for Saturday's Cornell match. Tickets can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during business hours.

COVID-19 Protocols: Per University policy, masks continue to be required indoors in public spaces at Lehigh for both unvaccinated and vaccinated individuals.   Masking will be enforced for all spectators at both matches this weekend. Failure to comply may result in removal from Grace Hall, and may result in all spectators not being permitted at future matches this season. Sections 103 (for 100-level ticket holders) and 203 & 207 (for 200-level ticket holders) will be physically-distanced sections for spectators who desire this. The Mountain Hawks opened action with a 25-6 win over Central Michigan before falling 28-7 to No. 1 Iowa and then 26-9 to No. 10 Missouri. Seven of Lehigh's 12 bout wins across the three duals came against nationally-ranked opposition, including four victories over top 10 wrestlers. Junior Josh Humphreys led the way, going 3-0 with three bonus wins against ranked opposition at 157. He earned major decisions over Johnny Lovett of Central Michigan and Kaleb Young of Iowa before pinning Missouri's Jarrett Jacques in the second period. Senior Jordan Wood picked up ranked wins over Matt Stencel of CMU and Zach Elam of Missouri. Lehigh's other top 10 wins came from first year Connor McGonagle, who knocked off No. 7 Dresden Simon of Central Michigan and first year Manzona Bryant IV, who beat No. 8 Max Murin of Iowa in sudden victory.

With the cancellation of the traditional Midlands Championships, Lehigh adjusted its holiday plans, sending seven wrestlers to the Illinois Matmen Open, Dec. 29-30 in Hoffman Estates, Ill. Four of Lehigh's entrants earned top eight places, led by Sheldon Seymour (125) and Nathan Taylor (285), who both finished fourth. Max Brignola (149) finished fifth and Carter Bailey (133) finished sixth at their weight classes, with Bailey reaching the championship semifinals. Other Lehigh entrants were Drew Munch (141), Connor Herceg (165) and Jack Wilt (184). All Lehigh entrants except for Seymour and Munch competed unattached.

Seven Lehigh wrestlers appear in the latest rankings by FloWrestling, while six appear in the latest InterMat rankings.  The Mountain Hawks also have four wrestlers ranked by both Amateur Wrestling News and The Open Mat. Senior Jordan Wood leads the way as he is ranked in the top eight by all four outlets. A win over Central Michigan's seventh-ranked Dresden Simon at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals moved first year Connor McGonagle into two rankings at 141. Juniors Jaret Lane and Josh Humphreys join Wood as Lehigh wrestlers ranked by all four outlets. Malyke Hines and Brian Meyer are ranked by just InterMat and FloWrestling, while Manzona Bryant IV is also ranked by The Open Mat. McGonagle dropped out of the InterMat rankings, but remains ranked by FloWrestling and AWN.

Twelve Division I teams will be competing in Niceville, Florida at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals, hosted by Journeymen Wrestling. The 12 teams have been split into red and blue pools with all teams wrestling two duals within their respective pools on Monday, Dec. 20 followed by one crossover dual on Tuesday, Dec. 21. Lehigh is in a red pool with Central Michigan and No. 1 Iowa. Its Tuesday match will be against one of No. 5 NC State, No. 10 Missouri or Binghamton. One blue pool features No. 6 Arizona State, No. 8 Virginia Tech and Hofstra, while the other includes No. 2 Penn State, No. 11 Cornell and No. 22 Northern Iowa.

Binghamton comes into Friday's dual with a 3-8 record. The Bearcats were last in action at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals in Niceville, Florida, where they finished sixth in the red pool, suffering losses to Missouri, NC State and Central Michigan. Binghamton's three wins are over New Jersey City University, Edinboro and Sacred Heart. The Bearcats are led by senior All-American Lou DePrez who has moved up to 197, switching spots in the lineup with his brother Sam. Lou DePrez is ranked 12th by InterMat. Also ranked are heavyweight Joe Doyle and 133 pounder Anthony Sobotker. Kyle Borshoff is in his fifth season as Binghamton's head coach.

Lehigh has won all five previous meetings with Binghamton, most recently a 19-16 triumph at Grace Hall last January. The first two duals in the series came at the Journeymen Collegiate Duals in Troy, N.Y. Pat Santoro owns four of Lehigh's five wins versus Binghamton.

Cornell brings a 3-1 record into Saturday's dual. The Big Red opened their dual season with a home win over Stanford and like Lehigh, competed at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals, Dec. 20-21, where Cornell went 2-1 to finish third in the blue pool. Cornell defeated Northern Iowa and Virginia Tech, while losing to Penn State. The Big Red have also competed at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and the Southern Scuffle. Cornell has nine wrestlers currently ranked by InterMat, led by No. 1 Yianni Diakomihalis at 149. Diakomihalis moves up from 141 where he won two NCAA titles. Jonathan Loew (184) and Lewis Fernandes (285) were runners up at the Southern Scuffle. Mike Grey is in his first season as head coach at his alma mater.

Cornell serves as Lehigh's oldest dual opponent as the Brown and White wrestled its first ever dual against the Big Red in 1910. In terms of number of duals, Cornell ranks third behind Penn State and Navy for Lehigh, with Saturday's dual set to be No. 99 in the series. Lehigh leads 62-33-3 and has won two straight in the series. Cornell has won seven of the last 10 duals.

Lehigh closes out its four-match 2022-opening home stand with two more duals next weekend. The Mountain Hawks will host Columbia, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Lions' first visit to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall since 1997 and then will host Navy in the 102nd edition of its second most-contested series, Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. The Navy dual will also serve as the 2021-22 Sheridan Dual as well as Lehigh's Salute to Service dual.
