No. 17 Lehigh Concludes Home Stand As Columbia, Navy Visit This Weekend

1/13/2022 12:09:00 PM | Men's Wrestling

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Mountain Hawks opened the 2022 portion of their schedule with two home wins last weekend and No. 17 Lehigh will wrap up its four match home stand this weekend with duals against Columbia Friday night (7 p.m.) and Navy (2 p.m.) Saturday afternoon inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.

The Navy match is the annual Sheridan Dual as well as Lehigh's Salute to Service Dual. Lehigh improved to 3-0 at home this season with its victories last weekend. The Mountain Hawks picked up three bonus wins and six bout wins overall in a 24-14 win over Binghamton last Friday. The following day, Lehigh won six bouts against Cornell, highlighted by victories by Jake Logan (174) and AJ Burkhart (184) over top 15-ranked Big Red opponents. Burkhart was named EIWA Wrestler of the Week after his 2-0 showing last weekend.

Updated Spectator Policy: Announced Jan. 12 and going into effect on Friday, Jan. 14, Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall will operate at 67% capacity. Tickets will continue to be sold in advance at LehighTickets.com and on event days up to 67% capacity. Last time out, Lehigh opened a four-match home stand with a 2-0 showing against New York-based EIWA opponents. The Mountain Hawks defeated Binghamton 24-14 on Friday night before taking down No. 8 Cornell 18-15 Saturday afternoon. Lehigh won six of 10 bouts in both duals. The Binghamton win was highlighted by bonus point wins by juniors Jaret Lane (fall) and Josh Humphreys (technical fall) and sophomore AJ Burkhart (major decision). The Mountain Hawks did not post any bonus wins against Cornell, but first year Jake Logan and Burkhart made waves with wins over top 15-ranked Big Red opponents. Logan beat No. 10 Chris Foca 5-2 at 174, while Burkhart defeated No. 13 Jonathan Loew 7-6 at 184. First year Connor McGonagle clinched Lehigh's third consecutive victory over Cornell after riding out the third period to defeat Cole Handlovic 2-0 at 141.

Eight Lehigh wrestlers appear in the latest rankings by FloWrestling, while seven appear in the latest InterMat rankings.  The Mountain Hawks also have five wrestlers ranked by Amateur Wrestling News and four ranked by The Open Mat. Senior Jordan Wood leads the way as he is ranked in the top seven by all four outlets. Jake Logan's victory over 10th-ranked Chris Foca of Cornell moved him into the InterMat and FloWrestling rankings. Juniors Jaret Lane and Josh Humphreys join Wood as Lehigh wrestlers ranked by all four outlets. Malyke Hines and Manzona Bryant IV are ranked by three of the four outlets, while Connor McGonagle, Brian Meyer and Logan all appear in two rankings.

It's not unusual for wrestlers to move up or down a weight class from one season to the next, but sophomore AJ Burkhart made a big leap, bumping up three weight classes to 184 after competing at 157 last season. Burkhart beat Oregon State's Mason Reiniche 10-4 to key a 9-0 run to close out Lehigh's first win of the season back in November. Last weekend, Burkhart went 2-0 with a major decision victory over Binghamton's Sam DePrez and then a 7-6 win over Cornell's 13th-ranked Jonathan Loew. The two victories last week helped Burkhart garner EIWA Wrestler of the Week honors. Burkhart went 12-10 at 157 over the previous two seasons and started three duals at 157 last season.

Columbia makes its first visit to Grace Hall since January 1997 for Friday night's dual. The Lions have competed sparingly this season, going 1-1 in duals with a home loss to Michigan in November and a 46-0 shutout of LIU last weekend. The Lions kicked off December at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, where Joshua Ogunsanya placed seventh at 165. Four Lions: Angelo Rini (133), Zack Witmer (133), Matt Kazimir (141) and Nick Fine (174) placed at last week's David H. Lehman F&M Open. Columbia has four wrestlers ranked by InterMat. Ogunsanya and Kazimir are joined by Joe Manchio (125) and Kyle Mosher (157). Zach Tanelli is in his sixth season as Columbia's head coach.

Lehigh and Columbia will meet for the 20th time with Lehigh owning an 18-1 lead in the series. The Mountain Hawks have won 12 straight duals in the series since Columbia picked up its only win by a 17-8 margin on Feb. 18, 1922. Lehigh and Columbia met 13 times from 1913 to 1931 and have only met three times in this century. Friday's dual marks the Lions' first visit to Bethlehem for a dual since 1997. Pat Santoro is 2-0 versus Columbia as Lehigh's head coach.

Saturday's match with Navy marks the 17th season that Lehigh's legendary former coach, Billy Sheridan, is honored with a single dual meet against a high profile opponent. This year marks the 11th straight season that the single Sheridan Dual pits Lehigh against an EIWA rival and the fifth time that rival is Navy. Five of the first eight Sheridan Duals under the current format were hosted at Stabler Arena. From 2000-2003 Lehigh hosted the Sheridan Duals, a series of duals in which the Mountain Hawks faced three opponents on the first or second Saturday in December at Stabler Arena. Before that, Lehigh hosted the Sheridan Tournament, which began in 1979.

Navy is wrestling just its second dual of the season Saturday at Lehigh. The Midshipmen have been busy on the tournament circuit as they have competed in the Clarion Open, Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open, Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and David H. Lehman F&M Open. The Mids also hosted the Navy Classic in December, finishing third out of 12 teams. Navy's lone dual thus far was an 18-16 setback at Maryland on Dec. 11. Three Mids appear in the latest InterMat rankings, led by Andrew Cerniglia, who is ranked 20th at 157. Josh Koderhandt (133) and Jacob Koser (197) are also ranked in the top 33. Koderhandt, Cerniglia and Jacob Allen (125) all placed in Las Vegas. Allen and Cerniglia also placed last week at F&M along with heavyweight Ryan Catka. Cary Kolat is in his second season as Navy's head coach.

Navy is Lehigh's second most often-wrestled rival trailing only Penn State. Last year's Navy victory in Annapolis snapped a nine dual winning streak in the series for the Mountain Hawks. Navy was Lehigh's second-ever opponent in Lehigh's inaugural 1910 season. Lehigh now leads the all-time series 53-48.  Pat Santoro is 11-2 versus the Midshipmen.

Lehigh heads back on the road next weekend to face No. 4 Oklahoma State at historic Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Okla. The Cowboys lead the all-time series 10-2 but Lehigh won the most recent meeting on criteria - 21-20 at Stabler Arena on Nov. 16, 2019. The match at Oklahoma State will be Sunday, Jan. 23 at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT.
