BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The first roadblock of Patriot League play was met on Saturday afternoon, as the Lehigh women's basketball team fell at Holy Cross, 64-53 and saw its five-game win streak snapped by the Crusaders.
Â
On Wednesday, the Mountain Hawks return to Stabler Arena to host Bucknell at 6 p.m. in a rematch of last season's Patriot League semifinal matchup. A victory over the Bison would put Lehigh at 9-1 at home to start the season, which would be the best mark since going unbeaten at home during the 2009-10 season. A win would also extend Lehigh's win streak at Stabler Arena to four straight games.
Â
Once again, senior Emma Grothaus led the Mountain Hawks on offense against Holy Cross on Saturday, scoring a team-high 15 points with seven rebounds and shooting above 40 percent from the field. Grothaus has scored in double-figures in all three Patriot League contests this season so far. In her second game back from injury, Clair Steele finished with four assists. She has registered at least four assists in all nine games this year.
Â
Despite Saturday's loss and scoring the fewest amount of points (53) in any game this year, Lehigh still ranks among the Top 10 in the nation in free throw percentage (7th, 79.0), 3-pointers made (10th, 138) and 3-pointers made per game (9th, 9.9). Sophomore Mackenzie Kramer ranks 11th and 12th in both of those latter categories, respectively, while Grothaus is currently slotted 40th in blocked shots (26).
Â
Another key stat-streak was also snapped against the Crusaders as Lehigh was previously 8-0 when allowing less turnovers than the opposing team. The Mountain Hawks committed just 12 while forcing 17 in the loss.
Â
After losing the first two games of Patriot League play, Bucknell got back on the right track following a 62-42 victory over Loyola Maryland on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Carly Krsul led the Bison with 14 points and six rebounds off the bench, while Cecelia Collins had 12 points, six boards and seven assists and Taylor O'Brien added 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks to lead the way.
Â
Bucknell shot 41.5 percent (22-for-53) from the field including 36.4 percent (8-for-22) from beyond-the-arc in the win, while holding the Greyhounds to 39.1 percent (18-for-46) shooting from the field and just 14.3 percent (1-for-7) from long range. First year Lex Therien scored 23 points with 14 boards and was subsequently named Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the third time.
Â
O'Brien remains one of the most consistent offensive threats in the league, leading the Bison with 17.9 points per game and averaging 5.9 rebounds with 2.0 assists and 2.1 steals. Collins (11.2 ppg) and Krsul (11.2) are also averaging double-figures in points. Krsul is the team's leading rebounder at 7.2 per game, while Marly Walls has a team-high 3.5 assists per game this season so far.
Â
Krsul ranks among the nation's leaders in blocked shots, ranking 31st in blocks with 28 and 32nd in blocked shots per game at 2.00. O'Brien is 40th in the country in total points with 250.
Â
Bucknell has lost four games this season, one each to Army and Navy and also against then-No.17/25 Ohio State and Temple in non-league play.
Â
In recent years, it's been an all-out rivalry between Lehigh and Bucknell in women's basketball with the Bison leading the all-time series, 48-44 including a 39-25 edge in Patriot League contests.
Â
Bucknell has won nine straight games in the regular season, but had its overall series streak snapped by the Mountain Hawks in the Patriot League semifinals last March.
Â
The Bison claimed all four regular season matchups last year - two at Stabler Arena and two at Sojka Pavilion.
Â
Wednesday's matchup will be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required) and on Fox Sports Radio 94.7 FM and 1230 AM.
